So with Cohost shutting down in about 24 hours, a note to every remaining social media site: You should totally rip off the "Following" pane.

Cohost had a view where (as alternative to the normal linear feed), it showed everyone you follow, sorted by last post, and you could click to see recent posts. A problem with social media is the more you post, the more space you take up. Cohost "Following" made everyone take up the same amount of space, while still prioritizing recency. A nice compromise

Check out the catch up view in @phanpy, a third party web client for Mastodon. It is exactly that.

Many mysql processes "/usr/bin/mariadbd" and CPU at 100%,makes Friendica unstable

Hello @Friendica Support I need your support please
I have a problem for a few weeks now which makes my server unstable , and makes Friendica inaccessible, the simplest and fastest solution is to restart the server.
I noticed that this problem also happens to me when I send friend requests

Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS
Friendica version 2024.08
mariadb Ver 15.1 Distrib 10.11.8-MariaDB, for debian-linux-gnu (x86_64) using EditLine wrapper

As you can see from the screenshot there are many mysql processes , /usr/bin/mariadbd , and the CPU is at 100%

Some help please...

Thanks
Cheers

in reply to Anomaly ☑️

Have a look at your MySQL/MariaDB settings. It seems as if you could assign more memory to it. Have a look at the innodb settings. I can't really suggest any specific values, see here: mariadb.com/kb/en/mariadb-memo…
in reply to Michael 🇺🇦

Hi @Michael Vogel
I tried to change my configuration /etc/mysql/my.cnf I added

[mysqld]

join_buffer_size = 2M
innodb_log_file_size = 1G
tmp_table_size = 512M
max_heap_table_size = 512M
wait_timeout = 60
max_connections = 500
skip-name-resolve
query_cache_size=64M
innodb_buffer_pool_size=4600M
key_buffer_size=1G
innodb_file_per_table=1
innodb_log_buffer_size=212M
innodb_buffer_pool_instances=5
innodb_flush_log_at_trx_commit = 1
innodb_flush_method = O_DIRECT
open_files_limit=40000
table_open_cache=2200
wait_timeout=28800
interactive_timeout=28800
max_connections=1000

This is the current configuration,I made small changes at a time, but the problem is the same (Bad Gateway Error 502), with the other configurations I had little RAM usage but the CPU was at 100% .

It could be an inefficient/Slow query? 🙄

For discoverability and user experience, it could be worth moving these hashtags away from the sidebar (which is usually navigation that isn’t contextual to the content) and to the profile itself? And for the profile owner themselves, add an “Edit featured hashtags” next to it?

I simply adore this photo of James Earl Jones & Big Bird.

Yes, he played a lot of memorable dads from Darth Vader to Mufasa to King Jaffe Joffer + countless other incredible roles on & offscreen.

And Mr. Jones also happened to be the very first celebrity guest on Sesame Street. #history #media #art

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

what roles was he famous for when he made his appearance? Darth Vader? He looks quite young, I'm not sure kids would know him as anyone else.

None of my 32 different personalities have ever listened to a Taylor Swift song. But a few of us have read that she is a good, kind, highly intelligent and generous person. She also supports U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota.

Elevators are magical rooms for Capricorn. We go inside, the doors close… reopen… & suddenly we’re in a totally different place! ✨

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

I have often wondered how dogs parse elevators---if they understand they're going up and down or if they really just think these are doors that "swap out" the scenery.

There's a dog at a retirement home near here, and he knows how to go floor to floor. He'll stand in front of the elevator and wait for people he knows usually go to the floor he wants to be on, then follows them in.

Universities are not just businesses, but an investment in future generations

I would go a step further and argue that universities should nit be treated like businesses at all

Happy #caturday everyone. This is Rigby’s bartering service where he trades puffballs for treats. He will pick one out, often his favorite blue one, and proceed to announce his decision loudly as he carries it through the house to the office. The crying continues until he drops the puffball at which time he will tap my arm to alert me to the gift he has brought me. My role is to heap tons of praise on Rigby and reward him with a treat (or two).

@Andrew Pam Thank you so much, Andrew. They say tears are good..they release toxic chemical from your body.
- CRYING HELPS DETOX THE BODY
"Reflex tears clean out debris from your eyes, such as smoke and dust, helping protect them. Continuous tears protect your eyes from infection by keeping them moist. Emotional tears contain stress hormones and other toxins that they flush from your body."

Study: Cats in little crocheted hats shed light on feline chronic pain

Our feline overlords aren't particularly known for obeying commands from mere humans, which can make it difficult to study their behaviors in controlled laboratory settings. So a certain degree of ingenuity is required to get usable results—like crocheting adorable little hats for kitties taking part in electroencephalogram (EEG) experiments. That's what researchers at the University of Montreal in Quebec, Canada, did to learn more about assessing chronic pain in cats—and they succeeded. According to their recent paper published in the Journal of Neuroscience Methods, it's the first time scientists have recorded the electrical activity in the brains of conscious cats.

Do you think they did a multi-color wood cut for each frame?
in reply to Muse

@Karl Auerbach Someone has used a computer to create a number of animation styles that look like watercolours, pastel crayons, chalk, pen and ink, etc. They have also clearly used rotoscoping. Very clever, and still a lot of work. (I ran an animation society for 17 years)

I don't know if this works for anyone else but this feels like a nice picture to me.
