Did you see the northern lights yesterday?

A solar storm made the aurora borealis visible in Vancouver, where I live, and even in places south of that, like Toronto. I photographed the lights on film with my Canon F-1 and a roll of CineStill 800T.

Not bringing a digital camera was one of the best decisions of the night. Film is the best way to capture this event.

'Raahe Wanha Herra' or 'The old gentleman of Raahe' is believed to be the oldest surviving diving suit in existence, dating back to the 1700s, from Finland. It was made from stitched calfskin. The diving suit was made waterproof by sealing it with a mixture of pork fat, tar and pitch. The hood-shaped head is reinforced from the inside with a wooden framework. In the upper part of the hood is an opening for a wooden air pipe.

I finally read the Nobel committee's press release on this year's chemistry prize: nobelprize.org/prizes/chemistr…

Two points are bit irritating:

"... have developed an AI model to solve a 50-year-old problem: predicting proteins’ complex structures."

The 50-year-old problem is *understanding* how proteins fold, not just predicting the outcome.

"That we can now predict protein structures and design our own proteins confers the greatest benefit to humankind."

A premature conclusion in 2024.

There's a lot to say about the new #Mastodon version but the most impactful change for me so far is the new boost icon. It now visibly changes when pressed, while previously it would barely change colour/thickness, a difference often too subtle to notice on screens with low constrast/brightness.
