My one grandmother had stacks of this stuff! Including the flour sacks with patterns for making children's toys!

Fashion History: Feed Sack Fashion

Because we're talking about history here, all sewing history moment blog posts will be written based on research from scholarly sources, such as peer-reviewed articles, books, journals, etc. I will always list the sources I used in a bibliography at the bottom of the post, in case you want to do some further reading!

Without further ado, our first sewing history moment will be focusing on an innovative and resourceful way in which 20th-century North American women outfitted their families- sewing garments out of flour and feed sacks...

A fascinating example that bucks the usual trend that once something becomes affordable, it is no longer deemed desirable.

For example, gelatin molds were considered high cuisine when only the moneyed class could afford it. After Jell-O made it affordable to everyone, it transitioned from high cuisine to dated kitch.

But here? Feed sack fashion culturally transitioned the other way - from an embarrassing necessity to try and hide to becoming a sign of resourcefulness.

This shows that it's possible to make a philosophy of "nothing goes to waste" culturally fashionable. And if something is fashionable, manufacturers may cater to that demand.

Excellent point @Isaac Kuo!
Secondhand shopping has become popular again for pretty much the same reasons. Someone comments on something I'm wearing. I say, "Found it in an opshop". (Australian for secondhand store) They smile and give me a nod for being a skilled treasure hunter.

Finally! The Hydroxychloroquine study by Gautret et al. has been retracted. I wrote a critical post about it in March 2020, days after it came out. scienceintegritydigest.com/2020/03/24/t...

And for the people who keep asking privately: no I'm not leaving Mastodon, you can relax, just not personally checking the replies any more (if I can help it) and mostly have the tab closed now.

Replies are too noisy and toxic with my follower count here with all the reply-bros being annoying.

Much love.

Huh, was not expecting WhatsApp to be on that list. I didn't know you could even follow people there. Not berating, just surprised.

On the face of it, this opportunity looks great - paid artist-in-residencies at the Max Planck institute!
e-recruiting.pro/jobposting/56…

€8k seems like a good fee, until you notice that it's for four months. That's a bit less than minimum wage (€2080) in Germany. I don't know if that's taxable, but even if it isn't it still doesn't seem great when it seems they're looking for an artist with an established practice, to collaborate with people probably earning much more.

That said it looks fantastic compared with Goldsmiths in London - they have a similar four-month residence with no artist fee at all, apart from £250 per month to cover costs. arebyte.com/digital-art-reside…

It seems researchers are provided with space in order to do their work, but artists should accept the offer of 'free space' as payment for doing the work that they do in it. I just don't understand this...

This entry was edited (1 year ago)
in reply to Alex McLean

I have a theory about this - outline: 'work' is paying people to coerce them to do things they don't want to do, so why pay people for doing something they enjoy? Work as a performative anti-art. I may explain this further at a future point!
in reply to Syntə

Yes that even works for people with life of leisure thanks to an independent income! There are a lot of residencies designed for those people that are basically expensive paid-for holidays with a studio.
In most people's reality though, art is hard work and is generally a search for meaning rather than happiness.

@foaylward Mycetosoritus is less common than Atta, but they seem to prefer similarly sandy soils so I nearly always see Atta when I see these.

FBI informant who lied about Biden 'bribes' pleads guilty

A former informant has pleaded guilty to lying to the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) about a fake bribery scheme involving President Joe Biden and his son Hunter.

Alexander Smirnov, 44, also admitted tax evasion after not reporting more than $2m (£1.58m) in income.

His claims became the basis of an impeachment investigation in Congress which centred around the false claims that the Bidens made millions in bribes from Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company.

But Smirnov admitted he made the story up, and pleaded guilty in Los Angeles on Monday as part of an agreement with prosecutors.

This is such a nice read. This is EXACTLY what I always say about operationalization and quantification: it's about what travels.

"Quantification, as used in real-world institutions, works by removing contextually sensitive information. The process of quantification is designed to produce highly portable information, like a letter grade."
