After two years of working from home, yesterday I escalated myself from minor VPN problem to massive total everything fail. “You’ll have to bring it in,” they said. So I put the whole thing carefully into a bag and I drove to where technically I do still work, slinking in like a thief. It felt wild and bright, and the tall trees were even taller than I remembered.

Our study programme has been spared the worst ravages of covid. Only a couple have had it, and that happened after they had 2 vaccine doses. Thankfully mild cases. Due to the nature of our programmes (fine arts filmmaking), we've been able to have the students on campus far more than most, and our precautions have been so strickt that people seem to have been spared. @kenbauer @katebowles

I live in Vermont. My friend is a professor at University of Vermont which, strangely, has tried its damnedest to "return to normal." Almost a marketing thing, she says. But her classes have been a mess. And extremely stressful. I am glad your uni kept strict precautions. I think covid has become so so political here in the States it has made many administrators (not to mention political "leaders") crazy. Be well. Be healthy.

P.S. I love sharing other people's plant pics, but I only share those that have image descriptions 😀

Indeed. I get the pineapple ref, it's big (so are pineapples, and yellow), but yeah prawn is pushing it a bit.

pinkish and related to the lobster ($20). A little too forced. Anyway, #theftbyfinding is a thing

Thanks for the project.
I hope I will be vigilant for Thursdays.

Good luck with the novel.

in reply to Algot

thanks so much. I'll put out weekly links to remind.

And thanks for your best wishes on my novel. I have samples here, if you'd like to see: geoffreygevalt.com/hiramfalls ... I'm having so much fun, though it's the most difficult, complex project I've ever tackled. Be well.

I don't think so. It's a children's show from the 1960's through to the 1990's involving a puppet that turns viewer submitted squiggles in to pictures.

Emoji to express platonic, low-pressure condolence :rhizome:

I saw this on a Slack and I'm so happy we could add it here. The rhizome :rhizome: (can) denote rooting for someone, possibly gingerly, caring without connotations.

Thanks @socrates for getting it added :success: :BlobCatCoffee:

I did it as a courtesy for the local timeline so it didn't take up too much space, the details on providence weren't as important as the announcement imo

rambling verbosity

Thanks. That makes sense now; I'm glad I asked.

It showed up as a content warning, and I couldn't fathom why, so I worried there must be some people who are very easily distressed in ways I definitely don't understand.

But I understand now.

If there are people who get easily annoyed by clutter I am likely to annoy them a bit sometimes, but that is a much less stressful social situation for everyone than what I was imagining.

El coste de la utopía digital

¿Y si el coste que conlleva el ceñirse a la agenda del «no hay alternativa» del tecnocapitalismo es notablemente más alto de lo que habíamos previsto?

This Thursday, on Medium.com, I start a new weekly column on writing, A Digital Writer. I will share things I've learned (often from mistakes) from nearly 50 years as a professional journalist, writer, editor and photographer. Comes out every THURSDAY. Prequel here: writingcooperative.com/buildin…
I hope the column will be of service.

Crosslabs in Tokyo runs a monthly online event where they invite people to talk about various talks on #artificialintelligence, #artificiallife, #consciousness and related topics.

The livestreams are usually around 30 minutes, followed by a 30 minute invite-based discussion.

They just announced the topic for this week "Would you shut off a robot that might be conscious?". Seems interesting!

G'day! I'm Conal Tuohy. I'm a NZer who's lived in Australia for years, with my Aussie partner. We live in Brisbane.

I'm a freelancer, doing software development, specialised consultancy (Web APIs, XML, linked data, text encoding) & training for a bunch of clients, especially #GLAM organisations and digital humanities people in universities. Always on the lookout for new & interesting work!

During the pandemic I've become an unpaid publicist for a bunch of local water dragons.

in reply to Conal Tuohy

Hello fellow Brisbanite (ok, I'm not technically in Brisbane, but I work there).

We're now also on Mastodon and we come bearing good news.

Intoxicados: ¿qué hacer ante los discursos de odio?

Las redes sociales potencian los discursos de odio porque los capitalizan: contenidos “intensos” atraen más atención y esto se traduce en permanencia en los sitios y monetización.

Lab glassware: can anyone ID?
Unpacked some glassware and found some strange pieces. I doubt anybody has used these before rather they're likely salvage from some lot of chemistry stuff. Not sure what they are though, neither nurdrage or nile red have prepared me for this. I suspect the piece with the stoppers is some sort of distillation apparatus, but that's all I can guess.

Worked out a mounting system for the long forge (the bolts pictured, which will sit on two rails from my Regular forge), and welded up the air intake and ash dump.

Currently waiting for the rails to cool as I had to forge in a lip so they’ll attach to the regular forge frame.

All this is so I can heat treat the cutlass blade, but will be a handy long term addition to the workshop.

in reply to David de Groot 𓆉

Hmm, it sort of works. I’m not happy with the mating of the rail to the frame. Might need to think of a more sturdy fitment.

Excitement for a regional gathering on autonomy and survival in NYC

woodbine.nyc/buildingautonomy

This year I was contemplated going to the DWeb Summit and Dinacon but I don't think I will have the capacity to travel to these events and would prefer to linger around BwoB this summer. So I am absolutely thrilled to learn about this gathering in NYC where I hope to meet both very local organizers and well as organizers around the Northeast who are thinking about/working in the solidarity economy
