The Book of Leaves, a simple stop motion animation of 2400 different leaves arranged so that each leaf blends subtly into the next slightly different leaf. Mesmerizing doesn't even begin to describe this...it actually put me in a trance. kottke.org/22/12/the-book-of-l…

this looks like those latent space animations that were popular when GANs were coming out, it's incredible that this is done by hand.

It’s going to be a long night.

In the Northern Hemisphere, that is. Tonight is the #WinterSolstice, which occurs when either of Earth's poles reaches its maximum tilt away from the Sun. This happens twice yearly, once in each hemisphere. Learn more: go.nasa.gov/3vbLGJY

Not my designs obviously — the iPhone UI is concept art called “iOS ‘86” by Anton Repponen — but I’m throwing some old school monochrome designs onto the Open Book’s screen, just as an exploration. (I don’t think these make a lot of sense fwiw)
in reply to joey castillo

ok clearly this is my design now. My head’s still in old school BBS-oriented retro stylings; this is almost all done with plain text and Unicode box drawing characters. (The Open Book’s font is stubbornly 8x16, a hard requirement that’s limiting, but necessary)

On this, the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, we bring you a planet where a year, one orbit of its star, takes less time. K2-137b races around its star in less than 5 hours. It's 320 light-years away. exoplanets.nasa.gov/eyes-on-ex…

I wonder if humans can adapt to such a fast rotating and orbiting planet like this? And so close to the sun?

A post-migration re-#introduction!

I’m currently a postdoc in Marlene Behrmann’s lab at Carnegie Mellon. I’m broadly interested in understanding the #psychology and #neuroscience underlying the #development of cognitive abilities such as categorization.

Recently I’ve been exploring the broader biological network that may support may object categorization (e.g., doi.org/10.1016/j.tics.2022.09…) and the #computational processes that may support few-shot categorization in infancy (e.g., doi.org/10.7554/eLife.74943)

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

>fheroes2 is a free and open source game engine reimplementation of the classic Heroes of Might and Magic II,

Is it remake of game, just engine or it's remake of game using open source engine? I'm lost. what does "engine" here refers to?

Annoyed With Clear, the Company That Fast-Tracks Its Customers Through Airports? "CLEAR is simply a way to pay extra to jump the queue accessing a federally mandated process." I hate it. slate.com/business/2022/12/cle…
in reply to kottke.org

As a very frequent flier I consider Clear a godsend. Yes, it is insane that it’s necessary. Yes, perverse incentives created the company and it has perverse incentives. Yes, tax filing software is a good analogy.

But a couple hundred dollars to save tens of hours per year in line, and more importantly, to reduce the variability of airport-to-gate time? Hell yeah. And if people who want greater ease end contributing disproportionately to airport revenue… is that so bad?

in reply to kottke.org

fun fact: the TSA has zero jurisdiction before you actually reach the agent. Everything before that belongs to the airport. So any person can just push to their way to the front of the line, and there is nothing official the TSA agent can do about it.

I’ve seen this happen twice at SJC, and both times the TSA agent apologized to the angry crowd still in line and said there was nothing he/she could do.

The US Levels map gives you a score based on how many US states you've lived in, visited, passed through, etc. (I scored 215.) tenpages.github.io/us-level/us…
in reply to kottke.org

Ouch, I’m only a 95! I wasn’t sure the difference between “stayed” and “visited”. I just marked “stayed” for any place I’ve been to overnight.
in reply to kottke.org

215 is insane. I pretty much "stayed" in most every U.S. state but have only lived in two. My score is 185.
