I enjoy Rob Words! This video comes up with some surprises about the loveliest and ugliest languages!

I guess it depends upon your point of view. Many people think Polish is an "ugly sounding" language, but I like it, even though I do not speak it. There's a "schushie" sound to it that is unique and pleasant.

'She also points out that some viruses such as Ebola and Zika don’t have a known latent phase, yet “we know people where, six months after recovery, you get transmission of #Zika, or #Ebola, or reactivation of problems . . . That means that full length RNA is there and can resume production.”

July is a great month to see the center of the Milky Way under clear, dark skies. 🌌 This long exposure image reveals green airglow and details in the Milky Way not visible to the naked eye. solarsystem.nasa.gov/skywatchi…

The eight point speculars are from the JWST’s segmented mirrors. In total, so large, no spacecraft could launch them unfolded. It orbits the sun, not the earth, in small pocket behind the earth, of almost pure lack of gravity. It hides behind a stretched many-layered Mylar mirror designed to reflect away any heat coming from behind so the images are not distorted. The mathematics, engineering and organization necessary to even create this photograph is almost as stunning as the result.

- I find it a useful practice, when my parochial problems loom large, to remind myself, (living near the sea), that there are calculated to be more stars in the universe than there are grains of sand on all the beaches in all this world we inhabit.

If you're at #FOSSY I hope you'll join me at 3pm in the DEI track (room E147) for my talk:

Con flu, con crud, and COVID-19: the time for #HealthAndSafety policies is _yesterday_

It's been difficult to prepare for. It's emotional subject matter as someone who has lost a brother to COVID-19, and still has a lot to lose. But it's so important. We need to do better as community and event organizers.

If our events have a Code of Conduct but not a Health and Safety policy, we've missed the point.

#OTD in 2011, NASA's Dawn spacecraft entered Vesta's orbit, studying the asteroid's geology and composition. Dawn revealed that Vesta is actually a protoplanet surviving from the earliest days of the solar system!

While we are still trying to find ways to clean up problems like oil spills in the ocean, microorganisms in the seas have their own insights to impart.

Oil rich soil from the Guaymas Basin has provided German scientists understanding of a mechanism by which archaea in the Alkanophaga break down alkane molecules and thus degrade petroleum through oxidation.

@RL_Dane I've read this already 😀 I feel this has been out for a while, no?
in reply to Devine Lu Linvega

@neauoire @RL_Dane Yes and no!

It's complicated: I put the slides up in February. Then I started writing the annotated "Web Page Edition" a month later and did several editing passes. All of it has been public, so it was possible to read it at any of the various stages of development.

The original slides contained about 3,500 words. This thing is 33,200 words. 🤯

in reply to ratfactor

@RL_Dane I think by the time I came across it you were pretty close to being finished. It's a really nice piece btw, I think I've told you before. It touches up on everything. I've sent it to at least 10 people already at this point.

TIL that there are a lot of English words that have been borrowed into German. Especially in advertising and product names, it seems. The transition is not always a smooth one, however.

I Was Wrong About Mastodon

The crucial mistake of social media was trying to force people with wildly incompatible views to co-exist in the same space. In real-life, I can choose who I associate with. Now, I’m most certainly not looking for an echo chamber. I need my views to be questioned and debated, but it must be by people capable of civil discourse. We should discuss, we should reassess, we should admit when we’re wrong.
