Linux users out here arguing that the modern kernel should have support for pre 802.11b hardware for context we're talking max Wi-Fi speeds of 2 Mbit/s, a standard from 1997 phoronix.com/news/2023-Linux-D…
in reply to Brodie Robertson

My biggest Linux gripe is that we never got API revisions for drivers, and the drivers are stuck in the kernel tree because of it.

When Linux was new-ish, Slackware had essentially IDE (PATA) or SCSI kernels, tossed on one bootable floppy disk, while the rootfs resided on another. That would have been a great time to make a 0.1 driver API and split out the source tree so the drivers lived separately, and a kernel supported driver API revisions. Hindsight, 20/20

in reply to Brodie Robertson

TBH you'd be surprised how many installations of that are still around i.e. for industrial robots.

After all, those have quite a long lifespan and don't get replaced just because ZigBee or whatever is the latest hotness.

Same goes woth a lot of "Internet of Shit" appliances...

in reply to Muse

i saw a meme yesterday (cant find it today) which showed each State and Territory stamped with the head of Homer Simpson except for ACT = Lisa, sitting with her head in her hands.

Local newspapers on Friday: "Flag Furore" headline - a local Elder lady asked why the Aboriginal flag or Torres Strait Islander flag weren't on the wall while the Australian one was. So the AEC covered it up. OH NO YOU DONT said one Buffo who then got a half-page interview full of white noise such as "Yeah well we're here now". Another got a full-page letter to the editor about how everyone better hide their Hills Hoist bc the 3% of our population are about to take everything everything.

Second paper, from another town in the electorate, was all "Yes! This is a good thing! Let's do this!" letters.

Third, closer to home, just kept the fuck out of it and didnt print any letters to the editor at all.

As Briggs said "Not all who vote No are racist, but every racist will vote No". sigh..

This App Is Coming To Linux WITHOUT XORG SUPPORT?? #Linux #YouTube youtu.be/rQF5zJ6Lfho
in reply to Brodie Robertson

I mean hey, I can only see this as a good thing. Not just the wayland support, but also supporting distrobox. Some apps work jankily in distroboxes, so I'm glad that they are aiming to make the app functional with it (most are fine, but I notice this mostly in windows first apps).

I also find it hilarious that the LTS is not not supported, only 23.04 is.Despite the fact I think most businesses using linux as their workstation would use Ubuntu LTS.

in reply to Brodie Robertson

This gives me vibes of a developer that uses Arch but in the company they force him to test it on a stable release of an enterprise-friendly OS like Ubuntu xD.

Just from the fact that he mentioned the archlinux wiki <img class=" title=":archlinux:"/> <img class=" title=":archlinux:"/>

In this week's episode of the #SudoShow, I discuss Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (#VDI) present and future with my co-hosts, especially in the context of the #wayland future. We break it down and shine a light on where things are and where they're going!

“Vote NO on Woman Suffrage” 🙄

Not ancient #history, but just a century ago.

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Sigh. i also learned a couple of months ago when my wife gave a presentation that 'Abdu'l-Bahá, the Son of Bahá'u'lláh - Founder of the Bahá'í Faith, had been invited by many women suffrage groups in England when He was there to give talks and that at that time there were MORE women opposed to suffrage than for it!

1/ What can you, a software engineer, do to fight #ClimateChange? My initial answer continues to be politics (codewithoutrules.com/2019/09/1…) but I now have a secondary answer.

There's a lot of software out there and it's ludicrously inefficient. Not because people don't care, but because no one bothered to look, or the cost is spread across millions of people, or because no one has time (open source! it's fun.)

Let me give you some examples—

This book is ringing so many alarm bells in my head. I'm trying to remain aware and present but it's clear that I react to the idea that I am worthy of pleasure - especially in moments that are knee deep in activism - and it's hitting home in a way that's making me defensive. And I appreciate the author for providing this. I wish I had this, and many other reads, a lot sooner.

thanks for sharing this. I teach amb's Emergent Strategy to my grad students, but I always hope they read this one on their own too:)

Cargo ships are finding that using sails allows them to reduce fuel usage by *one third*. Only 30 of the world's 60,000 cargo ships are wind-assisted right now, but it appears that the entire industry has just figured out that it would be foolish *not* to put sails on their ships. The potential reduction in emissions—CO2 and otherwise—would serve as a significant reduction in the rate of climate change. nytimes.com/2023/10/03/climate…

This is neat, coming in GCC v14, ASCII art for visualising certain compiler errors (in this case a buffer overrun). You can play with this in the compiler explorer: godbolt.org/z/K537cqsYc

Got to love Youtube's terrible comment moderation leading to people blaming you for things that didn't happen

YouTube almost always automatically deletes links, DO NOT POST THEM

There literally isn't a function to mark a comment as disinformation, that's YouTube doing it
