Someone posted a joke about cursors but then I realized I didn't actually know why we call them cursors.

We get it from slide rules. Cursor is Latin for "runner".

How did they get it so big? Or is it taken from a telescope really far away?
in reply to (moving) APOD

The idea that we are looking 2 million years into the past is very cool. The fact that the galaxy is tilted from our point of view makes the left side (in this picture) about 150,000 years older than the right side.

Honestly that's the best part about watching your vids.
I want to be marketed towards only using wayland only stuff.

I've been working on the command-line API client, ap, for the #ActivityPub book I'm writing for O'Reilly Media. It's a Python program that implements commands like `ap inbox` (read the inbox) and `ap reject follower` (reject a pending follower).

Originally, I was testing it live, just running it against onepage.pub. This weekend, I buckled down and wrote real unit tests with unittest.mock. It's been amazing; what a great tool.

Watched the last episode of TechOverTea by @BrodieOnLinux , with Georges Stavracas, a great lead dev in Gnome, Wayland, you name it. The amount of shiite and harassment he, and many other FOSS people have to suffer is simply staggering. And no, it's not 'them', it is from the 'free and opensource community'. It's by us. Think about that and let it sink in. We have to do better for them and act, no coffee talk. As a true community.

@AtPlume I totally understand not liking it and being incredibly critical of the technical descisions that are made, the refusal to do anything but CSD for one is simply a bad idea. This I fully support, what I don't like are people who extend that into character assassinations and go after the people behind the project.

I would love to see them using a diffierent git forge than github but it seems that this is not happening 😥

@sertonix That would be nice and now that everything is on git it would be easier to move but I wouldn't expect it to happen

This is like reading an analyst report that says water is wet and fire burns things. Wild that it's taken over a decade for mainstream analysts to say this out loud.

Pretty sure the charismatic thing is a few years out of date at this point too.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron
His followers think he's charismatic (pronounced identically to "his mother thinks he's handsome.")
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron not to mention he has been failing to deliver his own promises for almost a decade now. Since 2015 he has been announcing full autopilot for Tesla "before the end of the year". Every year.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron Only ever charismatic to people who’ve never met an actual funny person.

Let’s see what it’s like using Apple Music nowadays…

Spotify’s insistence of pushing for discovery instead of my heavy rotations (rearranging my playlist ordering, constantly showing the Now Playing screen after I disable it, making AI DJ impossible to disable, etc.) has been soooo annoying as of late ☹️

in reply to Adam Bell

I haven't used Spotify in a while but Tidal is annoying in the same way. Stuff like My New Arrivals or Suggested New Albums rarely seems related to my actual music taste. That's actually the one thing I remember being better on Spotify.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron yeah, Release Radar was really good (and Discover Weekly), but I only perused those every so often

in reply to Crazy-to-Bike

in reply to tom

@tom

@tom
in reply to Crazy-to-Bike

in reply to tom

@tom

@tom
in reply to Crazy-to-Bike

@tom

@tom
in reply to Crazy-to-Bike

@tom

@tom
in reply to Crazy-to-Bike

in reply to Tealk

@Tealk @tom @dominion :verified_root:

in reply to Crazy-to-Bike

@Tealk @dominion Im Zweifel tatsächlich Fluch und Segen. Reichweite vs Auslastung.
in reply to tom

@tom

@Tealk @dominion :verified_root:

in reply to Crazy-to-Bike

in reply to tom

@tom

@Tealk @dominion :verified_root:

in reply to Crazy-to-Bike

in reply to tom

@tom @dominion
in reply to Crazy-to-Bike

@Crazy-to-Bike :Friendica: Das würde mich auch interessieren. Ich warte immer noch auf mein Erscheinen. 😉

This is the irony of the re-emergence of Harmful Algal Blooms on Lake Erie - more #Walleye. More algae means more #zooplankton (and #benthos) which ultimately feeds these fish. They have also been eating Yellow Perch (another desirable, targeted planktivorous fish), and driven down their numbers considerably.
-
Some people want more fish.
Some people want less harmful algae.
Can't have both.

The push and pull of lake management.

GNOME Developers Suffer Constant Harassment #Linux #YouTube youtu.be/cOzTz6GQ64E
in reply to Brodie Robertson

It's most important to talk about this.

Lemme tell you a story. Back in, it might be 2008ish i was already fully on linux, KDE 3.5 I think. I met someone online I liked, she was using Windows live messenger. I tried with Kopete, a multi messenger. It wasn't working all that well. To the point where I jumped in IRC and just threw all my anger at the devs. How crappy it is, how they can't even make the texting work, they pointed me to the bug tracker. That angered me even more. 🧵+

in reply to Brodie Robertson

Many Linux users are lifeless individuals who want conflict and force their opinion on other. "You have to use KDE." "You have to use Arch." etc.
There isn't really a solution for this other than telling every toxic community member to do something with their lives lol

I totally love this device ..! 😀

Snow covered Langdales from Blea Tarn

I took this on Thursday, the snow cover took me by surprise. A heavy shower had just moved across the Langdale fells and then the sun came out - it took me a moment to realise that the reason the mountains were so bright was because of the snow.

Black Friday is a massive bait-and-switch. You queue up in the cold and dark waiting for a chance to grab a item which is 'on sale' (it's not, really) and in 'limited supply' (also not real).

If a big-screen TV normally costs $1200, but Ugly Box Store is selling it for $600, the manufacturer is still making a profit, only now has the added entertainment of watching people gouge each other's eyes out trying to score 'big savings.'

in reply to Muse

I've often speculated that the ruling class/moneyed interests amused themselves by getting us to fight with each other. You can't get much more disgusting than fighting over consumer goods when you could buy them any other day and save yourself the bruises, even if it means paying full price. I just really don't get materialism. It's like the energy drink paradox in which the more you drink the more exhausted you get. It's a psychological negative feedback loop. It brings out the worst in us too.

For decades corporate Australia has drooled over US Black Friday. This looked so much better than Melbourne Cup Day! Finally, it has worked its way into our culture, even though most Australians have no idea that it is a post Thanksgiving shopping spree event in the US.

This weekend it was already awful on the roads and near shopping centres. On Saturday mornings I often like to go to Eastland Shopping Centre, not so much for the shopping as for the plaza area where the local library and Kyoto Cafe are situated. I pick up a book or bring a book, read, have lunch, maybe pick something up from the shops (like socks yesterday), then head home.

Silly season has hit big and early this year. So many dangerous drivers on the road. I'm going to have to skip my weekly treat until January, because I refuse to be near the mayhem. sigh!

in reply to Muse

Can't wait until it opens... I'll be there for a few hours before work every day! Coffee, cats, and books!
