The invention of the ox-drawn plough was a turning point in the #prehistory of #agriculture because it was the first time food production was decoupled from human labour (doi.org/10.15184/aqy.2019.105).

This is why, from Medieval Europe to the ancient Near East, farms were measured by the number of oxen (later horses etc.) working it, not people (doi.org/10.1002/9781118970959.…)

Yet it's surprisingly difficult to pinpoint when this actually happened.

The condition of fabrics from pile dwelling and wetland settlements is amazing. This charred ball of thread was found at the site of Marin-Epagnier/Préfargier. It was made of hemp or lime fibres, and dates about 3900 to 3300 BC. The thread measures a total of about 10 m in length.

An amber necklace dating back to approximately 420 AD, found in a grave of a Germanic woman in Schleitheim, Switzerland.
The woman, who died between the age of 25 to 29 years, was buried with various valuable possessions, including silver jewelry and glass beads, in addition to the amber necklace. The rich jewellery reflects her elevated social status.

Currently on display at "THE hidden LÄND" in Stuttgart. On loan from Kantonsarchäologie Schaffhausen.
