Somehow stayed up to 4am watching the Game Awards and I've just been left with an overhanging feeling of frustration and anger at the state of the industry and the sheer disconnect between image and reality

It's an awards show almost without awards, centering adverts and celebrities over winners and creators, unable to address the major issues impacting creators like their concerns over genocide in Palestine or the masses of layoffs that went into making many of the games it chose to center

Far from creators being important, you highlight one game that proudly chose to use AI voices and another that mere weeks ago had a long investigation against published in IGN for how it treated women and all their employees (Black Myth: Wukong)

Creators are the bottom rung of dirt in such a so-called 'celebration' of gaming, presented by brands so you consume, consume, consume ign.com/articles/how-black-myt…

in reply to Alicia Haddick/アリシア

You have a developer trying to thank someone they lost being ushered off by swelling music and a WRAP IT UP sign on a teleprompter because they need to make way for more ads

It makes you wonder why you make games, write about them, when clearly you don't matter

And it makes the industry seem immature that it can't handle serious issues and has been so unable to cultivate creators as public people that despite economic superiority over other mediums you need to let celebrities talk more about broken feet than award winners because you have no one who can be a similar face and name representative

And no, Kojima isn't that, but 10 minutes to him for a teaser while winners say nothing stings

It's just frustrating, honestly angry, and overshadows even the few games shown that look interesting to play (even if it shouldn't be a focus)

this seems like it's supposed to be what NMS was supposed to be.

I hope they can have a good release and if they have to tone down some features for the release, that they end up supporting the game for many years to come, like they did with NMS.

@xinayder Not really, completely different style of game to NMS with a single planet

I second this message from this bot BUT! Be careful because this website appears to have a growing number of people reading literal nazi propaganda. Some books are fine, and some books are questionable.
This is just a reminder to be careful when listening there, because I know it could be upsetting to stumble across there.
Also, your public library likely has a deal with places like this which also provide similar services, so don't be afraid to branch out if the books in one space aren't to your liking.

Edit: also this isn't to say preserving that media isn't important, you just need to be careful going in.

Any takers?

Every so often I check back in on the multi window protocol and everytime Matthias has to jump through more hoops to appease the Wayland protocol devs to avoid a global coordinates system we've now achieved meta windows that apps can position themselves in gitlab.freedesktop.org/wayland…
in reply to Brodie Robertson

to be fair, what are compositors like stardust supposed to do when there just isn't a global coordinates system?

i mean, i get scrolling compositors aren't popular and i can't find any active ones but stardust at least is active and has a genuine use-case for non-objective coordinate systems given wayland doesn't know what a z axis is

in reply to Nova🐧✨

@technobaboo That's a really weird case because normal apps are simply never going to work in a way that makes sense in that environment, things would need to be modified specifically for that style of system
in reply to Brodie Robertson

i don't think they'd need to, if windows can be placed relative to others then that's very directly translatable to 3D space!
in reply to Nova🐧✨

@technobaboo It's translatable but it'll never be as good as apps designed for a 3D environment, it'll just get them working
in reply to Brodie Robertson

technically yea, but you can get 99% of the way there and even make some 2D apps work better in 3D than 2D given the right translation
in reply to Nova🐧✨

@technobaboo Here's a question, couldn't a 3D compositor just use the coordinates given not as the literal position but as a spacing difference between the windows of the app
in reply to Brodie Robertson

yes, but given you have infinite space and the virtual monitor clips to the side, how can you make sure the windows always have room to put windows to the side?
in reply to Brodie Robertson

I really don't want to see a global coordinate system, unless all compositors allow turning self-positioning windows off.

With Wayland, apps are finally appearing on the correct (active) monitor, whereas with X lots of apps and all the windows they create just open on the leftmost monitor (coordinates 0,0), even though my primary and active monitor is to the right of it.

Thanks to e. g. KWin rules, users (but not apps) can still place individual windows on specific screens.

I just finished this painting. I am entitling it: Frog in a Turner Storm
