Every Linux Distro Must Learn From XZ #Linux #YouTube youtu.be/4I7fgVuXZuU
in reply to Brodie Robertson

I think the arguments made in this article, though valid as they are, fall short one step: Even if you manage to set up a proper, financially supported supply chain for Linux distributions, you still haven't solved the really pressing issue in FOSS: Where do you find the people to do the actual work? Being paid does not prevent burnout and money is not enough in today's market to attract talent to do grunt work.

In wich State was it, that librarians are forbidden to associate? There was something in the News here recently, but I couldn‘t find it anymore. 🧐

A bill in Louisiana, HB 777, would make it a crime for librarians to use public funds to join the American Librarian Association or attend an ALA conference, punishable with prison time and hard labor for up to two years.

#libraries #education #books #librarians #theocracy

in reply to Jen Sorensen

For a minute, I thought you mentioned "hard labor" in jest---imprisonment for such "offenses" being already ridiculous and anti-democratic--but there it is listed as a possible punishment in conjunction with imprisonment. What a ridiculous pile of BS, speaking as a former librarian. Louisiana is absenting itself from the American experiment, along with a few of her sister states. Buh bye. (I'm in Florida and we are essentially dropping off into the sea.)

Hello fedi. i am trying to solve the "fetch all replies" problem once and for all that makes the fedi feel a lot more desolate and with a lot more reply guys in it than it should be. this is take two, where before i had it triggered by a button, but now i think it should happen on the server-side whenever you expand a post. can anyone help me out figure out how to make this more efficient by only fetching posts that the server doesn't already have? i am not sure what the best strategy would be, and if anyone with experience doing efficient rails and SQL stuff could give me some pointers that would be gr8. the patch is actually extremely simple it just needs a few nice things to make it not DDoS everyone.

looking at this object, makes me feel like there's little difference between this and a piece of marble. To look at, the feeling is very similar. Both are beautiful but lifeless. What meaning can I glean from this enormous object that I can't from a relatively small one that has a similar visual presentation?

Is that you Dobbie? Could you use a hat?

I’m calling this one “13 YEARS”

Help! which version is more powerful?

Born in 1750, Caroline Herschel worked as assistant to her astronomer brother William. But she also made her own discoveries of nebulae, stars & 8(!) comets.

In 1787, King George III employed Caroline as her brother's assistant, including a small salary that made her one of the first women paid for their contributions to #science.

Caroline submitted over 550 stars to the existing star catalog & received honorary membership in the Royal Society. space.com/17439-caroline-hersc… #history

@enthusiast101 A lot of the performance is due to things like speculative execution so it's a really tricky problem to solve
in reply to Brodie Robertson

yeah I guess it's difficult to go back to normal after higher levels of performance for so long.

In which @ntnsndr, in conversation with David Bollier – overcast.fm/+YVzymNQfY – does that thing where someone points out a dynamic that should be obvious, but it needs that someone to point it out to you:

Namely, that the client-server model of online infrastructure is inherently antithetical to democratic governance.

In our online lives, “we are in some sense being trained *out of* the democratic practices that have been so essential to practices of political democracies”

Some people on Kauai just paid $40k for annual leases of dilapidated cabins up in Waimea Canyon. It's a special place but these cabins are in terrible shape. They're up near 4000 feet elevation, so a good place to escape the heat in the summer, but...that's a lot of cheddar.

It would be nice if Mastodon's Android client weren't written and maintained by a crank who is unable to collaborate effectively or distinguish between good and bad dependencies. (Same problem, honestly)

man your show is one of the best out there. I love the format. You get so many different and interesting people on there. This episode in particular was crazy good. Never perceived Jay as this in-depth guy. I always thought he makes only superficial distro-first-look videos. Too bad he doesn't have a mastodon account, or does he?

Two lifeforms merge in once-in-a-billion-years #evolutionary event
Scientists have caught a once-in-a-billion-years evolutionary event in progress, as two lifeforms have merged into one organism that boasts abilities its peers would envy. Last time this happened, Earth got plants. The #algae Braarudosphaera bigelowii has been found to have absorbed a #cyanobacteria called UCYN-A, which may be a huge step forward for #evolution.
