The distilled models have been fine-tuned with R1's reasoning reaponses, which is why they emulate it: The self-questions and going out of the topic are not part of the "real" answer. The V3 is a normal LLM, which ahpuld run better and with less "filler".
That said, it's amazing you could run the 8B model AT ALL on a vanilla Pi 5. Maybe the DeepSeek V3 4B could be the sweet spot?

in reply to ⁂ Jnk ∞ 📎 • • •I wasn't sure, so after reading your comment, I went to the Ollama website and checked the model they provided. The documentation makes it pretty clear that it's a distilled version of DeepSeek R1.
As for the self-questioning and reasoning, I tested it with Open WebUI earlier, and while there was some reasoning involved, the final response was still correct.
The self-questioning part seemed more like the model thinking through the answer rather than adding unnecessary filler.
