Tux was a surprise gift from my then-husband, many years ago. A huge box that looked to be from a computer company arrived at my office, I was puzzled as I didn't recall ordering anything. Then I opened it and saw this guy. 🐧 💜

I am deeply jealous of anyone with bipolar disorder who hates how much mood stabilizers stifle their mood.

I wanna not feel emotions ever again.

in reply to Frigid Crystal Tormented Wrath

thats called apathy and literally what has so far made me end every romantic relationship ive been in

imagine suddenly u dont feel good abt someone u love anymore
and ur only left with the pressure of responsibility 4 that persons feelings
and u suddely cant face them anymore
because u know ull break their heart and u will never b able 2 give them what they deserve and it was a mistake 2 get involved with them because u know ur patterns will lead 2 u breaking their heart but u still let urself get swept away in a selfish bid 2 farm a few months of happiness b4 ur brain just pops a fuse again and from one 2 the next day u just suddenly cant feel $hit anymore and all just comes crashing down on top of u

ups and down make life interesting, but apathy will break u

@44 You walk in to a conversation about a disabled person and preach about how I should live MY life with not the SLIGHTEST context as to my experiences or feelings.

The fucking hubris of you.

The arrogance to think you automatically know better than the person who has suffered under their disability entire lives?

No, You do NOT have permission to tell disabled people how to feel about their disabilities or live their lives.

You wanna be an arrogant unhelpful shit? Go do it somewhere else, because the adults here are actually looking for solutions you goddamn child.

Does anyone know of a mood stabilizer that can or has a reputation for seriously muting a bipolar persons emotions?

Depakote has been only marginally effective

Seroquel and wellbutron and buspirone have proven to be wholly ineffective

medications, question

Quick Q for ya, are atypical antipsychotics at all on the radar? From a "do you experience delusions and such" perspective. If so, my fiancé has had decent success with ziprasidone, though because it's an atypical antipsychotic it's... extra funky, and the timing requirement of it is very strict (let alone needing to eat it with a decent enough meal).

When it works, it works great. When they miss a dose or the timing is off... the withdrawal for them sucks. If you can't take it roughly every twelve hours on the dot, at least ziprasidone specifically is a no-go IMO.

Unsure if it'd help, but that class of medications may be worth at least considering if mood stabilizers continue to not work within their therapeutic ranges.

A very incomplete list of things an ordinary #human can do for or with you that an #AI bot can't:

- Give you a hug
- Give you a kiss
- Snuggle with you
- Hold your hand
- Give you a literal shoulder to cry on
- Do your hair
- Do your housework
- Cook you a meal
- Walk your dog
- Play a physical sport or game with you

Feel free to add to this list

This is Mycena rosoflava. A species of agaric mushroom in the family Mycenaceae. It is a wood-inhabiting mushroom native to New Zealand.

It is also quite beautiful in my opinion, which is the real reason why I'm posting it ...

Abortion bans reshaped reproductive health, and now the rental market

"The paper is part of a growing body of research showing how abortion bans are reshaping communities. Other studies have linked abortion bans to higher rates of poverty and higher property crime rates, and found that they may be driving young people to leave their home states. Surveys have shown that aspiring doctors — especially those training to OBGYNs — are less likely to choose residencies in states with abortion bans...

"But the paper’s findings suggest access to reproductive health care is influencing a meaningful share of people in the United States regarding where they want to live — especially renters, who have more mobility than homeowners. Rental prices declined more as time progressed, which suggests the trend may continue as long as states’ approaches to abortion continue to diverge."

Are GIFs a thing on Mastodon? I rarely see them around… I’m kinda missing a reaction GIF culture. Am I alone in that?
in reply to Hannah Grace

I just have them on my computer. And if there's one I don't have, I search for it online and download.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron @Erased_Citizen
Can relate. I keep a reaction GIF library on my work laptop for teams chats with colleagues.
Should start one on my personal devices. Thx for the inspiration

You are right @Katherine Bond, ice would be unwelcome. Rain would be nice. I've seen very subtle signs of grasses starting to dry out. Ugh! It is way too early for heat.

Our grass is starting to green up some with all the water.

I agree that it’s way too early for heat.

When I started in security, one of the prevailing attitudes was "The weakest link in the chain will always be the human."

I would like to thank every LLM provider and startup for changing this paradigm by introducing a much weaker link in the chain.

AI Bullshit, mild Mastodon critique

@mkljczk AI is a marketing term and functionally useless. It means whatever big tech wants it to mean. I studied neural networks at university back in 2013, before there was even a whiff of a large language model. OCR was described in books from 2001.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron @mkljczk I do think there's value in distinguishing between OCR, a technology almost as old as I am, and full-on image transcription.

I'm used to using the term AI for both, but I don't have any objection to anypony else using a different term and I understand why Gargon would want to distinguish them.

been reading BLAME! on my reMarkable 2. this is what eInk was made for

Machine translations are often brought up as a gotcha whenever I criticize LLMs. It's worth pointing out two things: Machine translations existed decades before LLMs, and yes, machine translations are useful. However: I would never in my life read a machine translated book. Understanding what a social media post is talking about in rough terms? Sure. Literature? Absolutely not. Hell, have you ever seen machine translated subtitles? It's absolute garbage.

@df
Yes. The flowchart has three boxes:

1. Create LLM
2. Then a miracle occurs
3. Profit from AGI !!!

The companies pushing so-called "AI" have completed step 1. Some of them try to tell us that they've nearly got a handle on step 2, but that's just an attempt to swindle more investors. There is literally NOTHING that fits in the hole of step 2.

the sad truth is: most people (I'm including myself here) don't understand what makes good literature, music, art, etc.
A very good friend of mine, who is not an musician, "created" a song with AI two weeks ago. It made her happy. My husband, who is not an app developer, created his own smartphone app yesterday. It made him very happy.

Mass surveillance and censorship are escalating in many countries right now. There is a global attack on secure encrypted communication. Often, authorities, politicians, and tech companies work together to push for new laws. One example: when Ashton Kutcher (yes, the actor), through his tech company Thorn, tried to introduce total surveillance of all EU citizens through undemocratic and corrupt methods.

Catlang programming language idea: Rejoice

It's like Joy, but instead of a stack, it's a multiset, and transformations are local rewriting rules.

The program state is a bag of unordered things, transformations are represented as fractions where the denominator indicates things to remove from the bag, and the numerator, things to add. Evaluation consists of applying fractions from left to right, each to exhaustion, until the bag stabilizes.

Sexy plot point

Loved the depictions of the network family and the way the main character internalizes the data streams they use to make decisions. An optimistic vision of the future that highlights that issues we're working on now will still be relevant a hundred years from now. I totally fell for Rhamnetin too! Pleased to read the depictions of first contact from the physically intimate point of view.

I'm working on a little #Uxntal optimisation algorithm that is fundamentally of little use, it's one of those "I can't help myself" things, but I think it is quite nice:

What it does is, where possible, eliminate stores and loads in an <addr> <store with keep> ... <load> sequence, regardless of the intervening sequence. So it disentangles the stack juggling needed to put the address at the top of the stack for the load from the other operations.

After that is done, I have another algorithm that can eliminate the store/load pairs altogether.

I'll explain more when I actually get it to work.

in reply to WimⓂ️

ah! yes, I'd love to grow the list. That means everyone's programs get better when there's new peephole discoveries 😀 I'm also curious to see what you're working on with the load/store thing.

So this from @TodePond is really intriguing

youtube.com/watch?v=eQgxFuw8f1…

reminds me very much of string rewriting

I've kind of got some fragments of rhythm generation using rewriting techniques but seeing it visually kind of fires my imagination

via @neauoire who also does mental stuff in this space

in reply to Matilda

thinking about spatial rewriting unlocked some ideas about Rhythm generation - like a drum pattern is in some ways 2 dimensional - say a kick is followed two lines later by a snare a column over.

NOW - this will be exceptionally clunky to program so still need to think of an interface - it also needs a way of the non determinism being weighted without 'escape'

however..... interesting thoughts !

@TodePond @neauoire

in reply to Matilda

Have you considered wireworld? The ruleset is 3 rules, and it allows for trains, hooking it up to instruments for sequencing is quite fun 😀
