Is there anywhere on your website that tells us how your production chain goes?

Pear upside down cake. It’s what was for dessert tonight after a tasty but light dinner h off Cacio e Pepe.

Dodgy as hell, but I’ve almost finished constructing the long burner charcoal forge. Assuming it works as planned, I’ll be able to heat treat long blades.
Still to do, add end caps, and construct 90° air intake, and some form of stand.
It’s pictured upside down here.

Gorgeous autumn day here today. Puffy white clouds in a blue sky. A bit of sun, 23°C with a nice breeze.
in reply to David de Groot 𓆉

That looks nice. We are hoping to see spring soon .... It's so rainy and cold that it feels like autumn.
in reply to anonimno

Frankly Autumn here is just marked by being slightly cooler than summer.

It is often joked though that we have two seasons... Summer and Not Summer.

Since it's not really a proper Autumn or Spring.

I make some variation of this joke in all of my courses. It's always a hit. What are your favorite academic dad jokes?
in reply to Manolo Martínez

@OCRbot I thought maybe this was going to work but it didn't seem to make any output. The I felt bad that I didn't say anything and just tagged the bot. 😅 Yeah I think it's OK to put the caption in the replies if you forgot to add it to the caption on the image. Better than nothing 😁

(re)- #introduction ! I'm Danny (he/him), a microbiologist (PhD dropout). I took that experience as a cue to embed myself in DIYbio. I worked in pharmaceutical advertising while also teaching mol-/micro-bio in informal learning spaces.

Currently volunteering as the President of a community lab in NYC called Biotech Without Borders. Trying to organize a self-sustaining collective to steward a shared lab space (1y runway atm).

Also FLOSS, sci-fi, cute (:BlobCat:) stuff, 🇨🇦, 📚, 🍜 , 🎨, 🕺,:d20: ,🎮

Yeah happy to be around! Mastodon has been great for a sense of belonging and multiplicity of self. Have you seen any local DIYbio stuff in Scotland?
in reply to Danny (he/they)

no, I'd never even heard the term before tbh, but I'll bet there is stuff going on I don't know about. There's certainly a lot of science interest in the cities.
in reply to Badly-optimised primate

I bet there is. At least in someone's home. Fermentation is the original home biology experiment and that's part of what makes me hopeful that the skills to do small scale biological production could be put to use by a distributed network of folks who care. It's hard to organize a central shared lab so it might just be that that level of organization hasn't spread yet. If I catch wind of such a lab in Scotland I'll let you know and I'd appreciate if you would likewise alert me 😁
in reply to Danny (he/they)

Fantastic! A friend & former colleague is a neurophysiologist (PhD but dropped out of academia). He’s trying to pursue research on information transmission in fungal communication, esp electrical pulses. I would like to connect you two for ideas and possible collaboration opportunities. (He is not on social media)

New #fruitLoaf just out of the oven. I made the dough yesterday but ran out of time to bake it, so it spent overnight in the fridge. This should in turn improve the flavour from the show ferment.

Introducing the PineBuds and PinePod. Seriously.

pine64.org/2022/04/01/introduc…

in reply to PINE64

OK I know you're joking about the PinePod, but I use a FiiO M6 with a 1TB MicroSD card as my music player and portable DAC and _yo_ it is amazing... but FiiO had to discontinue its production because Samsung stopped manufacturing the teeny tiny smartwatch-oriented Exynos 7270 at its heart ( en.wikichip.org/wiki/samsung/e… ). Plus its firmware core is a a truly antiquated Android version.

If there was Pine64 player with a swappable battery, open software, and a killer DAC... well. I'd get one.

Wish we were joking -- these unicorn toys are taking a while to disassemble!

Damn, if I don't want that voice powered, home assistant connected unicorn plushy, April fools joke or not.

More reports identical to the gelatinous objects published by Otto Hahn, and posted in an earlier toot, are found in Section 6 of Chladni's "Fire-Meteors."

Here are found dozens of the most amazing reports of various types of objects falling from the sky associated with a light or fire-meteor. Lots of blood like clumps and rain, slimy, papery, flaky, and bituminous substances. Even stranger are hair- and thread-like masses, which in one case was sewn into clothing.

Injury
Against my better judgement I attempted to rescue this lost Ringtail Possum at work today. Alas, I did not have gloves or a towel with me, and the little bugger bit me.

I called my doctor, just to be safe. She asked if I had cleaned the wound (thinking soap and water), and I said, yeah, I used 70% ethanol solution (it's what I had available). She seems to think that sufficient.
in reply to David de Groot 𓆉

Injury

get well soon!

Is rabies a concern in this case? As far as I know, getting bit by a wild mammal should always be treated as a possible vector of infection. And now I'm thinking of that's even the case today and surely not in every part of the world. 😅

in reply to Eyes on Nature

Injury
Luckily no. Although there is a very very slim chance of Tularaemia (a bacterial infection), but since I doused the wound in 70% ethanol solution (yes is stung), I should be fine. Watching for symptoms just in case.
in reply to David de Groot 𓆉

Injury
and today I learned, at least you don't have to worry about that then.
in reply to Eyes on Nature

Injury
Yeah, if there's cases of rabbies, get the shot. It's unpleasant, but it's literally the only thing that can save you from an infection.
in reply to Dan Čermák

Injury

Technically there is no rabies in Australia.

There is Lyssa virus, which is very similar, but that only occurs in Bats.

in reply to Dan Čermák

Injury

Yep. No rabies.

We do have a range of critters that want to kill you, and there's Hendra and Lyssa Virus from bats, the latter being similar to Rabies, but only caught by being scratched or bitten by an infected bat.

Grabbing server metadata is not hard, and we do it.

I don't see why join/login ought to be distinct when you need to select a server in both cases.

There is an indication that you can long-press on first login, it's also a common UX pattern in other apps.

in reply to Eugen Rochko

Well, something's weird because it didn't come up for several minutes when I started it.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

Replies don't show up in the main timeline, only in notifs tab. Unlike the web client, and generally how other clients work.

There is no difference between the home feed in the web client and the iOS app, it is the exact same API call.

Heard a loud noise outside last night, but couldn't see what it was in the dark.

This morning revealed it was yet another tree down on the powerline.

Luckily, the cable is well insulated, and didn't break, so we still have power. An electrician has been messaged, but I'm not expecting to hear back before Monday.
