Fascinating and disturbing finding on how AI co-writing can influence opinion from Maurice Jakesh thesis research (h/t @natematias ). Jakesh had people write short essays using an AI tool like Google Autocomplete on whether social media was good or bad. When the tool pre-generated language supportive of social media (top bar), people were more likely to write essays with that opinion and vice versa (bottom bar).
in reply to Krzysztof Gajos

And more broadly, *any* predictive text system impacts the content of what people write. Smart keyboards and text prediction systems are not just tools for improving the efficiency of text entry. They inevitably alter the content of what people write.

This is super helpful. I am trying to assemble resources for students on thinking through AI assistance on assignments, and material like this raises better concerns than just "don't do it, AI is cheating."

Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Here's how newspapers portrayed him at the time. If you see a fellow white person sneering at #BLM, know that they'd have said the same about MLK.

peer review in academia
in reply to Giorgio Comai

thanks for pointing to this really thoughtful essay. I appreciate the compassion here, though I fear the loss of the *joy* in writing or receiving a really thoughtful review.

Somewhat more structured review templates could be useful in making the process both easier and more constructive.

I have also appreciated journals that sign the reviewer's name to an article they have recommended for acceptance. That both adds some incentive via credit and some accountability.

Astronaut Chawla came to my university when I was an undergrad and spoke with one of my classes at the @universityofcolorado was great hearing her speak and something I'll never forget.
in reply to NASA

What I remember the most is the difference in the reactions; after Challenger, everyone was still in shock for days, even if you weren't "one of them weird space freaks."

Columbia? It was pushed aside by all the news channels in an hour or so, and when I went out later that same day, there was literally no one else talking about it, or even seemed to be aware of it having happened. It didn't even make front-page news where I was, I don't think.

That was when I knew something had fundamentally changed in society, for the worse. Much worse.

So many people on this app get very hostile to any potentially useful feature request. Please understand that we all use platforms differently! A great social platform serves a wide variety of needs.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron For many people the absence of typing Mastodon-threads in the web interface is identical to threads not being possible.

You have to manually reply to a previous post, you can't prepare a thread in the online interface.

in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron Thread in Mastodon are not obvious. What people want is to post pictures of their dog and ask for others' pictures of their dogs and then see that these replies exist in one glance.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron how do threads work? How do specify โ€œthis is a threadโ€œ or โ€œthis is post one of eightโ€œ? I've seen people make it up, but nothing that looked like it was natively part of Mastodon.
in reply to Ian Channing ๐Ÿฆˆ

@ianchanning Reply to your own post to chain your posts together. Your self-replies will appear higher than other people's replies when viewing a thread.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron @ianchanning Yeah, but you can not postpone posting the first toot of the thread. You can only write the second tooth after having posted the first. That is pretty bad, because writing a good thread takes time, and you only want to post the whole thing when it is finished.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron @ianchanning If you want to, I should have added. Because I wouldn't want to flood followers' timelines with stuff that may only interest one or two of them. Though it's also possible to just cover the first post with a content wrapper/warning. I'm not sure if that has the same effect though.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron @ianchanning From a readerโ€™s perspective, this is identical. Whatโ€™s being requested is a separate compose mode where you can compose the whole thread before posting any of it. Some of the apps offer this.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron it's not very obvious that threads exist / how people should make threads (people often reply multiple times to the first tweet instead of replying to each previous tweet). This issue has a suggestion for making that better: github.com/mastodon/mastodon/iโ€ฆ
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron Threads suck. I used to block them on the bird site. I agree with Thomas from the quoted post that long-form writing should be posted elsewhere and linked to from Mastodon.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron how about allowing one extra long post per user per day. Easier to read than a bloody thread.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron The original poster was looking for a way / client to post a thread all at once, to avoid pauses and gaps between the related posts. (And contrary to what some have assumed, the OP did not want longer posts for this โ€” they wanted the separation the individual posts yield, but that they were part of an overall whole. This was for their stories of library drop-in days; threads that I enjoyed reading elsewhere.)
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron I think what people want is the ability to compose a whole thread and post everything together in one go.
Otherwise people with lots of followers may get some initial responses in the middle of the thread before they had the chance to post everything they wanted to express.

@taylorlorenz

in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron While there is certainly room for improvement, and improvements to threading do seem to be on the roadmap (joinmastodon.org/roadmap), threading in Mastodon is actually pretty good.

Here is a pretty (...way too?) detailed explainer on how to thread in Mastodon:

State of the industry: MSI offered a chance to win the ability to buy a GPU

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

This is why I'm happy the Steam Deck is a thing. GPUs in particular almost feel like getting scammed buying one and I just kind of want off that ride.

...Fortunately Valve came up with a solution that runs Linux as a cherry on top.

Granted it doesn't replace really high end cards but it's kind of to the point where it makes more sense to rent compute time than to try and buy one.

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

The one and only "ready to run" it self built pc I bought was the MSI Aegis something something 5. With a 3090 i9 11900K and 128GB of ram. Power machine. Monster. Superfast.
Ugly as fuck. Build to the limit. Permanently overheating, even with the water cooling unit which was built in.
No thank you. No MSI parts for a looooong time.
And no nVidia on Linux. Not until the OSS drivers are usable.

it seems like it's another one of the Tyler's sagas that ends up doing more damage to the Source community as a whole than helping it out.

I have nothing to say about this other than to describe it. Itโ€™s the view from the road on the way down to the beach near here. The sun wasnโ€™t setting. It was only about 13:30hrs. However the sun is very low in the sky at this time of year. The clouds are coloured by the pale sun and the sea shimmers with the reflection of it. In the foreground is a grassy slope that goes down to the gate which we use to access the seashore. In the far distance is the Island of Rhum.

Ancient DNA Charts Native American Journeys to and from Asia Thousands of Years Ago.
Whether by walking a land bridge or traveling by boat, hunter-gatherers ventured out from eastern Eurasia some 20,000 to 30,000 years ago to become the first Americans. But the intercontinental journey wasnโ€™t a one-way trip. Several times in history, genetic studies show, Native Americans returned across the Bering Strait to Eurasiaโ€”long before Europeans began arriving in distant parts of the Americas.
