Yes. This is #ClimateChange.

Fires, floods, heatwaves. Is extreme weather 'a new abnormal'?
Floods, fires, extreme heat, awful air quality, warming seas: As extreme weather engulfs the nation, the United States resembles a disaster movie set.Jenny Jarvie (Los Angeles Times)
I learned a while ago that - at least in German - this expression used to be very common until lobbyism managed to change it to the much softer and more natural sounding "climate change". I wonder if it's like that in all languages.

Hallelujah, it's raining paint!
Yeah-yeah!
(Can't wait for a non-desctructive editing in GIMP - this implementation would also make sharing my PD/CC art work a joy.)
It's hot again, so my boy Pörri is doing his best impression of a decadent Roman emperor leaning over his cups - that is to say, napping while using his water bowl as a pillow, and occasionally flicking his little tongue out to have a leisurely few sips of water. Sometimes he falls asleep like this.

A good read. Key bit:
"Obviously, the social networking space is undergoing a major shakeup. Twitter under Elon Musk’s chaotic reign has seemingly created an opportunity for an alternative microblogging service. With #Threads and #Mastodon both embracing #ActivityPub, it might not be one platform that wins out—but an open standard. "
If you're not aware of the Black Game Developer Fund (I wasn't!), hey, now you are. This is rad! blackgamedevfund.com/apply/
Yo #GameDev folks, maybe spread this one out a bit? I know very little about the fund itself / I can't vouch for it or anything, but more options to choose from is better than less when it comes to funding.
The Dutch government has officially launched their own Mastodon server, State Secretary of Digitalisation @avhuffelen announced today! The server lives on the official domain of the Dutch government, at social.overheid.nl.
The Secretary mentions in her announcement a letter to the government explaining her support for 'value-driven alternative social networks', such as Mastodon. For more information on that, check out

@Gargron, the API docs says v1 is being deprecated, yet I am told about 20 Apps use it, including masto mobile? If our extension uses v1 for something, can we count on it being around at least a year or two? Would there be much warning before it died?

This melt-freeze pattern is important for many animals, especially polar bears that spend time hunting on the ice.

The alt-text.org project is moving forward as folks from the community step up. We're still hoping to find someone with firsthand experience in browsing the web relying on alt text to join us.
A major impediment is funding, because we want to make sure they're paid. We're looking for funding, but it's early.
If you're interested in the project but only if paid, drop me a line, let's talk. I can be reached here or at hannah@alt-text.org

I love the demonstration of interoperability/conversion issues in slides/software by @fperez at the #NASACERN #OpenScience summit.
(and yay, image by @turingway on Jupyter!)
Open source software #OSS is an amazing part of science. We're lucky that people like Fernando pushed back and decided to work on software instead of things that are considered more 'die hard'/traditional science.
We should not depend on luck for this: work on software/data/methods should be fundable and recognised.
"We need to run away from metrics that are one dimensional. The temptation to reduce complex things to a number is tempting, but the problems and the toxicity that arise from this are problematic" - @fperez at #NASACERN #OpenScience summit
"We need to think of other ways to assess intellectual value, extending beyond the publication to sustain healthier scientific communities." - @fperez
(my interpretation of the quote due to some language and stream interruptions.. 😬)
"The number of people from Latin America in leadership positions is miniscule, especially compared to the userbase. I'm going to spend my sabbatical time to build capacity and work on problems that are relevant to Latin America. If #UNESCO wants to provide resources for that - I'd be happy to talk!" - @fperez
