I'm still so pleased with the Mastodon 4.2 update that bumped hashtags at the end of post below the rest of the content. Great job, @Gargron and team 🙌

in reply to Matt Birchler

That's how the design was supposed to look, but then people complained 😦
in reply to Eugen Rochko

I also preferred that look, the few days(?) it was online.

Follow your instincts, people will complain about any and every change at first.

in reply to Eugen Rochko

Haha, as someone who also works on products used by tons of people with different tastes, I totally get it! Even when my taste is clearly, objectively correct 😛

Twitter was once the go-to app for up-to-date news, first-hand accounts and quality journalism on the ground. But over the weekend, as users sought information about the Israel-Hamas conflict, they found platform X flooded with misinformation. So they turned to Threads, as Platformer editor @caseynewton explains for The Verge.

in reply to Mastodon Migration

My preference is for a site with a vibrant and growing ecosystem, and an innovative product. Mastodon is designed to be a niche, and that's fine if that's what it wants to be. I'd note that I still actually post here and read my replies, unlike 99 percent of my peers in the US tech press
in reply to Casey Newton

Where do you get the idea that Mastodon is designed to be niche?
in reply to Eugen Rochko

Mastodon isn't designed to be niche, but to be what a social network should be, and not an attention broker between captive users and the advertisers.

You think federation enables niches. I see federation more as resilience pattern against single point of failures (e.g.: X's single owner is a single point of failure, plus current owner is a liability).

If what you say is true, then 99% US tech press is an X's captive resource.

in reply to Eugen Rochko

I think strict anti algorythmic pose is what makes mastodon unattractive for journalists and celebrities. Popular creators will lose by coming here. Also, users have hard time following many accounts. Lists are not nearly convenient enough. So mastodon actually works best for small communities.

Algorythms are not that harmful when detached from advertising logic. And imho, could be even very productive if users would be allowed to tune them.

@Gargron @caseynewton @mastodonmigration @TechDesk

in reply to Eugen Rochko

I don’t know for sure, but I think “niche” is another way of saying “doesn’t rely on algorithms to suggest and promote content to users”, which is true.

In that sense, it is niche.

It means that the product requires intentional user effort to curate and perform, rather than have that offloaded to the code, which is also true.

Product ecosystems which rely on user effort are “niche”.

I could be wrong, but I think I’m directionally accurate.

Well isn't VRR also broken in practice with XOrg?
And I would be surprised if VSync wouldn't work in wayland (mutter is another issue, specially given how abismal gnome is at participating in wayland).

I assume this is about the drop X11 request on Gnome. Shouldn't the title be slightly different?
