Linux Looks Toward Dropping Very Old WiFi Drivers
While the Linux kernel tends to keep around drivers for even very old hardware, once there are no known users left that would still be updating to new Linux kernel versions or the drivers pose a significant maintenance burden, it's eventually time to…www.phoronix.com

i saw a meme yesterday (cant find it today) which showed each State and Territory stamped with the head of Homer Simpson except for ACT = Lisa, sitting with her head in her hands.
Local newspapers on Friday: "Flag Furore" headline - a local Elder lady asked why the Aboriginal flag or Torres Strait Islander flag weren't on the wall while the Australian one was. So the AEC covered it up. OH NO YOU DONT said one Buffo who then got a half-page interview full of white noise such as "Yeah well we're here now". Another got a full-page letter to the editor about how everyone better hide their Hills Hoist bc the 3% of our population are about to take everything everything.
Second paper, from another town in the electorate, was all "Yes! This is a good thing! Let's do this!" letters.
Third, closer to home, just kept the fuck out of it and didnt print any letters to the editor at all.
Unplugging Logitech USB Receivers Has Been Causing The Linux Kernel To Crash
Queued up this week as part of the HID subsystem fixes ahead of today's Linux 6.6-rc6 kernel test release has been a rather embarrassing bug: unplugging Logitech USB receivers has for the past several months been causing the Linux kernel to crashwww.phoronix.com

I mean hey, I can only see this as a good thing. Not just the wayland support, but also supporting distrobox. Some apps work jankily in distroboxes, so I'm glad that they are aiming to make the app functional with it (most are fine, but I notice this mostly in windows first apps).
I also find it hilarious that the LTS is not not supported, only 23.04 is.Despite the fact I think most businesses using linux as their workstation would use Ubuntu LTS.
This gives me vibes of a developer that uses Arch but in the company they force him to test it on a stable release of an enterprise-friendly OS like Ubuntu xD.

1/ What can you, a software engineer, do to fight #ClimateChange? My initial answer continues to be politics (codewithoutrules.com/2019/09/1…) but I now have a secondary answer.
There's a lot of software out there and it's ludicrously inefficient. Not because people don't care, but because no one bothered to look, or the cost is spread across millions of people, or because no one has time (open source! it's fun.)
Let me give you some examples—
What can a software developer do about climate change?
Pines and firs are dying across the Pacific Northwest, fires rage across the Amazon, it’s the hottest it’s ever been in Paris—climate change is impacting the whole planet, and things are not getting any better.Itamar Turner-Trauring (Code Without Rules)
This book is ringing so many alarm bells in my head. I'm trying to remain aware and present but it's clear that I react to the idea that I am worthy of pleasure - especially in moments that are knee deep in activism - and it's hitting home in a way that's making me defensive. And I appreciate the author for providing this. I wish I had this, and many other reads, a lot sooner.

in reply to Brodie Robertson • • •My biggest Linux gripe is that we never got API revisions for drivers, and the drivers are stuck in the kernel tree because of it.
When Linux was new-ish, Slackware had essentially IDE (PATA) or SCSI kernels, tossed on one bootable floppy disk, while the rootfs resided on another. That would have been a great time to make a 0.1 driver API and split out the source tree so the drivers lived separately, and a kernel supported driver API revisions. Hindsight, 20/20

in reply to Brodie Robertson • • •TBH you'd be surprised how many installations of that are still around i.e. for industrial robots.
After all, those have quite a long lifespan and don't get replaced just because ZigBee or whatever is the latest hotness.
Same goes woth a lot of "Internet of Shit" appliances...
