T-Mobile customers with older plans (Simple Choice, ONE, Magenta, Magenta 55 Plus) - double check any recent correspondence you may have gotten from T-Mobile. They are helpfully "upgrading" some customers on these plans to newer, more expensive, plans automatically in November *unless you opt out*.

Nominally you were notified about this via SMS or email, but check and, if necessary, act.

in reply to Casey Peel

no one I know has received any notifications since the news broke out, and we keep checking. They might have paused this because they got a lot of unwanted attention but we're still looking out for any changes.
in reply to Jorge

yeah they’re apparently not going to do it anymore… at least for now 🙄 cnet.com/tech/mobile/t-mobile-…

Slate Magazine : Cruise Control

A major robotaxi company was all over San Francisco—and poised to go national. California just banned it.

California DMV cited “an unreasonable risk to public safety” posed by Cruise robotaxis.

Not Safe... Self Driving Went Badly

#Technology #SelfDrivingCard #RoboTaxi #CA #SanFranCisco #CruiseRobotaxi #

in reply to Joseph Teller

I have been opposed to this sort of technology for quite some time, so I am glad that they saw the light, but sorry that so many accidents and injuries had to happen before they would realize the truth.
in reply to Joseph Teller

...not to mention a couple of other factors: one being the jobs we should want to preserve -- and the other, maybe less obvious, but equally important, is the human interaction that takes place. We need that connection and we benefit from the ad-hoc sympathy and flexibility that a human can provide.

hehehehe! @Clarice Boomshakala Bouvier Where are the TimTams? Where is the Golden Gaytime? Oh, and can I add musk Lifesavers? I reckon we could lengthen this list!

Many of you already know Karvinen, but let me tell you about Pörri. Pörri is very large and very soft and has unfathomable amounts of silky hair that gets absolutely everywhere. He has no idea why he can't fit on my lap at the same time as Karvinen, or that he's the weight of two small cats. Whenever he climbs onto my lap it's only a matter of time before he flips around, like this. I love him.

UBUNTU without the CONTROVERSIAL choices: try these 5 Linux distros!

makes sense.

I wounder if popular apps could use that to provide #FlatPak|s if they already build #AppImage|s...

in reply to Kevin Karhan

I've been curious to look into how flatpak packaging works at some point
in reply to Brodie Robertson

shure.

Personally, I'm currently moving into the extreme frugal #Linux #CLI / #TUI direction with OS/1337.

I need to get some fixups done to make it boot and then it would be ready to release.

#OS1337

in reply to Brodie Robertson

Flatpaks are a cool field! You can now also only add the verified remote:

```
flatpak remote-add flathub-verified --subset=verified flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatp…
```

Yes I know this command by heart

@kkarhan @thelinuxexperiment @ubuntu

in reply to Brodie Robertson

Before you do that, take a look at the GIMP beta Flatpak, using GTK 3!

GNOME Terminal No Longer Completely Sucks!! #Linux #YouTube youtu.be/sR6wkYuEwh0
in reply to Brodie Robertson

I don't use my terminal enough to notice speeds (except launch speeds). That said, it's pretty wild that gnome terminal is so slow that it needs to be frame capped.

That said, it's good that they are working on it. A terminal is one of things that you always expect to be fast and light on resources.

Question for the #MPI folks: Has anyone actively signed up to support the MPI "standard ABI" as proposed here? arxiv.org/pdf/2308.11214.pdf
#MPI
in reply to FCLC

MPICH has a prototype implementation of the new ABI (github.com/pmodels/mpich/pull/…) and it would naturally flow to the downstream vendors who have committed to previous ABI initiatives. mpich.org/abi/

haha, this idea is always weird to people that come from a "customer service" culture. Try “Tsundere” as a search term.

The full quote from Selfridge is "The customer is always right in the matter of taste". Meaning if they want to buy that godawful hat, sell it to them. Not meaning they can do no wrong.

The Fedora 39 Release Has Been Held Up By Raspberry Pi Bugs

Fedora 39 failed to make its "early" release target date, it didn't meet its otherwise targeted release date one week later, and is now facing another possible setback still. These release delays have been due to outstanding blocker bugs all related to the Raspberry Pi...

Profiles on Mastodon sometimes look blank even when they're not blank 😲

It may happen if the account is very new and/or doesn't have many followers. If you follow a "blank" account, posts made after that follow will appear as normal on the profile.

More info why, and how to see the actual complete profile:

➡️ fedi.tips/why-does-someones-ac…

You can prevent your profile ever looking blank to others by having at least one pinned post. Pinned posts are always visible:

Well done to the Carpentries for not only leaving Twitter (see hachyderm.io/@thecarpentries/1…) but also for developing jointly with rOpenSci a Mastodon Quick Start Guide to support everyone willing to move to Mastodon: doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.1001985…

Last year we released a statement in which we said we will continue “to monitor changes at Twitter in conjunction with internal discussions about whether our presence on the platform will continue.”

We now announce that as of today, 20 October 2023, all our #socialmedia engagements will be from this Mastodon account, as well as LinkedIn and YouTube, and none from our 5 #Twitter / X accounts.

Find out about these changes and more here: carpentries.org/blog/2023/10/a…

Great work! 🙂 Regarding the "Finding and Building Your Community" section, for academic communities I have found great value in public opt-in lists like these: nathanlesage.github.io/academi… (I run one of them myself.) If you're looking for academics to follow, you can also try find.sciences.social!

A few glitches here and there, but I can really see it as as new way to deploy Jupyter Notebooks.
in reply to David Brochart

Nice-looking project and despite the warnings on the GitHub site I couldn't resist trying it out. Installing in a conda env through pip did produce some problems; perhaps a guide to contributing and setting up a dev environment for this would be a good addition to the README? Feel free to add advice on how folks can help.
in reply to Alan Sill

@AlanSill Thanks, it's getting close to being usable so I'll polish it and make a release soon.
