oh I installed it today(I have broken pipewire on my fedora gnome) and its so much better than KDE 5.27. Like, it looks the same, but feels and works very different for me. KDE and gnome are pretty much the same thing in many ways now

Why is the sun apparently so large relative to the moon? Are we seeing diffraction through ice or a thin cloud layer?

in reply to Muse

Part of me feels like Morgan Freeman, who remarked about Black History Month, "I don't want a month. Black History is American History."

Our trans brothers and sisters are our HUMAN brothers and sisters. A day doesn't really cut it, though I understand the sentiment.

in reply to Muse

In this case it's all about being visible enough to get people to recognise humanity when they see it.

in reply to Muse

Yes, this textbook scam has to go. In the UK, universities have to inform students upfront about any additional costs incurred during their studies, including costs to buy books. (Basically, students in the UK are treated as consumers, for better and for worse, and are subject to consumer protection laws.) And just like magic, those requirements to buy a book went away.

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

The western industrial scale food system is certainly problematic, but, "Uses 37 percent of all ice free land," really? Source?
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

@lisamelton and yet when farmers protest, governments bend on climate change. Fuck farmers, charge a few of them as accessories to murder after the fact.

This is a bad take. I'd like to see the OpenSSF show a bit more empathy. A badge isn't going to stop this sort of attack.

in reply to Jim Perrin ✅

Imagine if it did already have a badge and something was snuck in anyway, I can make a pretty good guess that this would either not exist as a blog post or it would have a very different tone

The XZ Linux Backdoor Is Incredibly BAD!! #Linux #YouTube youtu.be/OHAyf0qwdCs
in reply to Brodie Robertson

Why starting with the loud clickbait and then saying the actual, useful info at minute 3? Unnecesary FUD.
This entry was edited (1 year ago)
in reply to Panderito

@alfabravoteam Do you understand what FUD means, because it doesn't mean what you think it does
in reply to Brodie Robertson

Cool, I'll improve in a language that is not my native tongue. Appreciate the suggestion, honestly, no sarcasm involved.

But of course that's the main point in my message, right?

in reply to Brodie Robertson

Long version: Look, I find you knowledgable and I enjoy reading you most of the time. Cool.
Also, I lived through the whole SCO thing and I KNOW how the term came to be something.

So, if you'd rather have me not using FUD outside of a very specific context, ok! But I've been reading about this xz thing because my work needs me to, and I find it unnecessary to have a board saying UPDATE NOW when most distros are not using the backdoored library other than rolling releases.

in reply to Muse

@Muse. Shades of Blade Runner. OpenAI is releasing Voice Engine, which uses a sample audio clip of someone speaking to create an AI-generated version of their voice.
nbcnews.com/nightly-news/video…
in reply to Muse

I always wonder what kind of spirit (psychologically spoken) it is that speaks out of any certain AI. It must derive from conscious and unconscious content of the its designers' and trainers' psyche. It is clear that an AI has no consciousness of its own that would go beyond its automatic decisions.
It might in some respects be superior to humans, and is driven by factors we can only partially know.

The abusive behavior that was being used to manipulate Lasse Collin into bringing on more maintainers for #xz went unnoticed because abusive behavior in Open Source communities is so pervasive. In context, we can clearly see it was part of an orchestrated operation. Out of context, it looks like just another asshole complaining about stuff they have no right to complain about. robmensching.com/blog/posts/20…

This passage in #GovernableSpaces was just highlighted to me—as was the fact that it should have included Nextdoor, perhaps the most feudal thing of all.

it appears that the upper left figure requires the sun to be larger than the earth which is larger than the moon, while the upper right figure has them all the same size. This must have bothered some of the monks

Vincent Van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, VINNIE! 💛 🌻
in reply to Muse

You're welcome, Muse!
I liked the song even when I didn't know it was about van Gogh, and from the few words of English I understood at that time, I thought it was about a handicapped boy called Vincent...
and loved it more than the other McLean song they played on the radio all the time 😀

Language fixes:

Why is a group of squid called a shoal when it should be called a squad?

Jet ski. Dumb name. Obviously it is a Boatercycle.

"Randomized Double Blind Trial" should be "Trick or Treatment".

Bee Hotels - lil wooden structure that solitary bees can nest in from time to time.
That's great - support local wildlife etc. But seriously, who was the marketing genius that decided NOT to call them all "Bee & Bee"s?

Narwhals should be renamed tunacorns.

Hemorrhoids should be assteroids.

My thoughts on this xz/liblzma stuff[0] is that we're reaching a boiling point where no one checks anything. Until we make simpler systems with less moving parts this will continue to happen.
