Love this channel but I will point out that I'm not sure we saw definitive proof of his lactose intolerance being cured and this video is more about replacing expensive cell culture media with gatorade-like drinks. All great work (esp like this low cost troubleshooting) but I think the technological promise needs to be tempered. We're not yet in the world where a small local lab can support imaginative and safe science projects at this complexity.
@danwchan I mean obviously none of it is safe, he's doing it out of his garage and later a private lab funded by a YouTube channel. It's just ridiculous that we live in such a world that an individual can do this at all is the main point here, I am not uncritical of him.
The tools are getting cheaper! I think growing rat cells is safe. Disposing of antibiotics needs some thought but folks at home may improperly dispose of antibiotics too. The virus delivering lactase is safe enough. But perhaps more discussion of the risk of antibiotic resistance in the DNA could be considered. The real "danger" IMO is untrained copycats or folks that interpret this as an alternative to established systems.
I do hope it encourages folks to wonder what independent scientific infrastructure could look like. As well as what could be possible if more folks were included in the process of technological development.
@danwchan the reality is that genomic science is moving to become a low capital endeavor such that even a middle income YouTuber can accomplish things strange, incredible, and concerning. I've heard it, the democratization of genomic science, referred to as the biopunk revolution. its effects however, are hard to predict to say the least.
