"What do we know about cosmic rays with energies above 5 EeV?"
...really not that much, but it's also the title of a nice and compact short review o #astroph today by J. Biteau, which I recommend!

holy shit I just read the post about you shutting down the whole forum. I totally understand your point , so banning the country was not an option?

When enabling collapsed toots, my expectation would be that the toots in question show up in a box with the height I set there, not 5px...

infosec.exchange is using a fork of Mastodon called glitch-soc, the function you’re describing is specific to that fork. cc @jerry
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@jerry on the poliversity.it instance @macfranc solved the problem by modifying the stylesheet of his instance. However, I solved it by using the RaccoonForFriendica app that manages different display layouts to shorten messages to the number of lines you prefer. Furthermore, if you use glitch-soc it also helps you write in markdown with a handy formatting tool bar.

Just a reminder that we are open from today, Wednesday 18th December, until Christmas Eve - that's seven days to pop in before we close for the end of the year.

Pop in and say hello, or you'll make our cat sad.

Can I bang my head a few times?

Humans may not have survived without Neanderthals

"Perhaps getting Neanderthal DNA was part of the success because it gave us better adaptive capabilities outside of Africa," said Prof Stringer. "We had evolved in Africa, whereas the Neanderthals had evolved outside of Africa."

"By interbreeding with the Neanderthals we got a quick fix to our immune systems."

We could also say that by interbreeding with Homo sapiens we were all better able to survive the environmental challenges of the time. Try saying that by the Europeans interbreeding with people of Asian or African descent we helped them survive. Surely they are ALL our grandparents and great grandparents! This reeks of racism.

in reply to Muse

@Karl Auerbach Most of us from a European background have a Neanderthal great grandparent! I have a feeling that Homo neanderthalensis in the past were just as "modern" as Homo sapiens. Are we even separate species when we were able not only to interbreed and create off-spring, but those off-spring could also interbreed and create off-spring?

Public Domain Day is almost upon us! Some highlights:

More Mickey Mouse, including his first speaking appearance.

The Skeleton Dance is finally legal to use for whatever you want!

The Black Watch, which is John Ford's first talkie.

Dynamite, which is Cecil B. DeMille's first talkie.

Popeye the Sailor (with caveats)

Tintin

Buck Rogers (fully free and clear despite previous assertions)

Rhapsody in Blue recorded by Gershwin himself

I suppose it's obvious, but 1929 is only relevant for usage within the United States, due to its 95 year rule. Other countries will differ.

Cyberpunk Librarian reshared this.

Another resource to share: free and high-quality art for life sciences bioart.niaid.nih.gov/

Good quality drawings and schematics are very important to convey your science to others, although sometimes we scientists don't have time to make these, or cannot pay for tools like biorender. I really appreciate this initiative from NIH

Fashion History: Feed Sack Fashion

Because we're talking about history here, all sewing history moment blog posts will be written based on research from scholarly sources, such as peer-reviewed articles, books, journals, etc. I will always list the sources I used in a bibliography at the bottom of the post, in case you want to do some further reading!

Without further ado, our first sewing history moment will be focusing on an innovative and resourceful way in which 20th-century North American women outfitted their families- sewing garments out of flour and feed sacks...

A fascinating example that bucks the usual trend that once something becomes affordable, it is no longer deemed desirable.

For example, gelatin molds were considered high cuisine when only the moneyed class could afford it. After Jell-O made it affordable to everyone, it transitioned from high cuisine to dated kitch.

But here? Feed sack fashion culturally transitioned the other way - from an embarrassing necessity to try and hide to becoming a sign of resourcefulness.

This shows that it's possible to make a philosophy of "nothing goes to waste" culturally fashionable. And if something is fashionable, manufacturers may cater to that demand.

in reply to Muse

Excellent point @Isaac Kuo!
Secondhand shopping has become popular again for pretty much the same reasons. Someone comments on something I'm wearing. I say, "Found it in an opshop". (Australian for secondhand store) They smile and give me a nod for being a skilled treasure hunter.
