I am wondering. If I make sure to not buy palm oil, usually it will be replaced by coconut oil. Coconut oil requires multiple times as much land to produce. So how come palm oil gets the bad reputation? Not here to discuss, just always wondered about this.

Media history from the 1970s.

'Thus Truckstop Network, was more than a road trip tour; it was also a statement about mobility itself... Placed just off the highway, each truckstop would offer an array of services for those living on the road: housing, electricity, and water; truck repair and a communal kitchen; but also communications services – computers and video equipment – seen, “like food and gas, as nutrients necessary for survival.” '

median.newmediacaucus.org/art-…

in reply to Fionnáin

thx for sharing, I enjoyed it too--it's a potent little preview for Prehistory of the Cloud. Maybe I've been living in a cave, but I hadn't seen the reference to Sedgwick's idea of "reparative reading" before, which seems like a practice that is more important than ever.

Also, "media nomad" is such a perfect Deleuzian term for the emerging informational lifestyles we see growing out of the remains of centralized forms of web media, especially here in the fedi!

This entry was edited (5 months ago)
in reply to Ed Summers

@edsu @simoon it's great, huh?

I'd never heard of reparative reading either but like the term and really like the concept behind it. In fact, there are a few wee turns of phrase in that article that I have put aside for future use.

in reply to Fionnáin

'By their very refusal to be assimilated into useful categories for Internet history, they stake out a space for the autonomy of their production. In contrast to understanding network culture as a paranoid world system, one that encompasses all networks, these weird and unexplainable moments offer the potential for an alternate, reparative reading.'

This is a war crime. Israel just bombed a prison ward where trans people were kept locked up. Hundreds of trans people exterminated. There is no rational explanation for this.

Israel called the bombing "symbolic".

Cool Jobs: Scientific glassblowers shape science

"Beakers, pipettes, flasks and more. Few people realize that skilled artisans make most scientific glassware by hand (and mouth). This career truly marries art and science. Some people came to glassblowing after training in science. Others started as artists who realized their craft could help advance cutting-edge research"

semi related to prev: the fact that there's a TLD (top level domain; the "dot com" in "example dot com") for both dot theatre and dot theater is so funny. especially since they belong to different companies.

if you want to buy a dot theatre domain, you obviously have to buy the american spelling too, or you'll get domain squatted. and vice versa. you have to pay two different companies for this.

when the beatles quadrilogy releases simultaneously in 2028, there should be one session at a theatre near abbey road that shows all four movies back to back.

after seven hours of film, the combined credits roll. two dozen minutes of slowly scrolling attributions. people are leaving the theatre, but you stay.

fade to black.

the lights haven't turned on yet.

silence and darkness for fifteen seconds.

a lone voice is heard. "room for one more?"

in five metre tall capital letters, a name appears: YOKO.

subtitle: summer 2032.

Hey there!

We do not use Google trackers on our website or blog, please do not worry about that.

As for video content — we have our eye on publishing our videos on PeerTube in the future. We will share an update as soon as we have news. This is a known demand.

And you mentioned notifications. If it is about our apps, please do share an issue on GitHub, suggestions would be invaluable: github.com/nextcloud

I checked with uBlock origin the day I posted that, and it was blocking 2 items from Google. Checking now I see Matomo instead, so thank you.

Why "in the future"? Tilvids confirmed they'd be happy to host you. I've offered to set up YouTube mirroring free of charge. There is no cost to you beyond giving permission, and yet I've been calling with no response for years.
