Lately I've been working on trying to add some speed / performance hacks to #DOSBox. The idea is a bit similar to the old DOSIDLE.EXE / POWER.EXE TSRs: detect when the system is idle or busy-looping, and give up the rest of the CPU cycles until something interesting happens (next frame, next BIOS tick, whatever).

There are a bunch of timing sources on the IBM PC and it's tricky to get them all, but as a proof of concept - here's the delay loop from GORILLA.BAS:

'Rest:
' pauses the program
SUB Rest (t#)
s# = TIMER
t2# = MachSpeed * t# / SPEEDCONST
DO
LOOP UNTIL TIMER - s# > t2#
END SUB

So, it busy-loops until the timer tick. In DOSBox I modified the BIOS INT 1A handler so that if the emulated machine requests the time twice and the same tick comes up, it's probably spinning, so I take away all the remaining cycle budget and sleep instead. And it actually works! Host CPU usage drops significantly - or, if you put it in Turbo Mode, the game plays WAY faster!

thanks for letting us know. Palm oil is unhealthy - so we'd be roasting on the inside if we eat it as the planet heats up to cook us better. I prefer to live my life raw, so I don't want to be cooked. I'm actively working on quelching palm oil consumption, but it's an uphill battle - they put it in so many products!

Why did you focus exclusively on Steam? With, "FOSS," in your publication's name, I would have expected and wanted you to point people towards DRM-free games on GOG and Itch as much as possible.

Introducing “Actions for environmental justice from autonomous and community-based technological infrastructure” 🌱

🧠 This idea clashes with ecological limits, and breaking with this cultural narrative is essential for building community-based alternatives that are fairer and more caring towards the planet.

a 'must read' article.

Our current president, Gabriel #Boric, signed the #escazu agreement ( Acuerdo Regional sobre el Acceso a la Información, la Participación Pública y el Acceso a la Justicia en Asuntos Ambientales en América Latina y el Caribe ) that is, nothing less than, the agreement that will help enabling all these environmental issues to be addressed in our country.

in reply to Sergio

One summer treat Kyōtoites cannot do without is 'kakigōri' (かき氷), a shaved-ice dessert covered in all kinds of deliciousness.

The first reference we have to kakigōri in Japan is in Chapter 42 of Sei Shōnagon's (清少納言 966-1017) 'The Pillow Book' (枕草子).

I posted asking for help on this a bit ago, and while I didn't get any solutions, it did get my brain thinking outside of the box, and I found the solution, its easy, but proof that the UI, especially the settings layout really needs some work around here.

For whatever reason, the necessary setting isn't under the timeline settings, but Social Networks

The key setting here is Followed Content Scope, default is 'Conversations my follows started or commented on', but if'n you change it to 'Only conversations my follows started' if will only show original posts and boosts.

Hopefully this'll help others, I mentioned in a comment on my original post, but that could easily be missed, so here we go. Oh, and if'n you've any tag suggestions, send them my way, and I'll prolly add them.

this is all true, but I think it is likely that the EU Commission and EU parliament fold to the pressure of the dear US leader and Bigtech selling out privacy and freedom of EU citizens

in reply to Matthias

@Matthias maybe we should start blocking whole instances, if they don't start cooperating and helping to prevent spam.

And I don't care if it is mastodon.social or any other big server.

If they don't even take simple steps to prevent spam, then they are among the bad servers and spam distributors that leads to set them on official block lists.

in reply to hoergen

@hoergen
In my view, these servers are behaving recklessly. In the midst of a spam wave, there is no reason why moderation should not be tightened. Leaving registration open, on the other hand, is an invitation to anyone who wants to harm other people. This is something we are willing to accept. That is negligent and not a good calling card for the Fediverse as a whole.

Yes, such servers are unmoderated from my point of view

No user will be rejected. It may just take a little longer for the registration to be checked.
