I am fascinated by how viruses evolve - and not just since #SARSCoV2 has shown us at the global stage how consequential virus evolution can be for us.
In my new story in Science I got to explore how researchers are probing deeper into the past with old RNA virus genome.
So a thread…

"A glass flask is as much about what it is as it is about what it is not; it is as much about the vessel blown into form by the glassmaker — and all the material qualities and technological, political, and socioeconomic histories that made that act of creation possible — as it is about the specific geometry of absence that it comes to delimit. Certain kinds of reactions can take place in that flask because of all the others that are excluded from it."
— Eduardo Kohn: How Forests Think Toward An Anthropology Beyond The Human, pp. 35-35
This section on absence is interesting. I've never thought about technologies for what they exclude by being in the world, more what they create or change.

Totally agree with your buried lede: Claude Code is truly a general purpose agent. I started using it for coding but now use it for editing transcripts and other text based tasks, at which it is far better than the chat GUI.
Also thank you for llm, it is becoming a good pal. It'd be rad to have skills-like functionality for that.

I own 3 Kindles: the original Kindle Fire right after it was released, a Kindle Keyboard which was a disappointment, and a Kindle Fire 7 which I got to be a cheap tablet for travel (failed at that because I didn't realize it was wifi-only, so defeated the purpose of having it for when I could not go on wifi).
All my phones came with a Kindle app for reading, same for what is now my travel tablet. Why get another actual Kindle?

The US instance of #Mobilizon doesn’t work very well. It really would be an ideal instance for someone in the US trying to organize a local meetup but, alas, if something doesn’t work then you can’t use it anyway.
Any recommendations for an alternative instance? I have no interest in self- or cloud-hosting an instance myself for a single group.
Side note: I know I look at the world through Fedi-tinted lenses, but how is a #Meetup alternative not the most popular Fedi-alternative to a big-tech platform already*?! Meetup charges money just to create a group with which you only make posts to organize people at events.
*yes, I know my current problem with Mobilizon.us doesn’t help this case.

Ubuntu runs on the server where I host my website.
But also I have a very old laptop that still had Windows XP on it. It wouldn't even display websites any more. I installed Zorin for 32bit and while it's still too old for most modern software I can surf the web again. It was meant to be a test drive of Zorin but given the age of the device that might be a bit unfair.
