I am fascinated by how viruses evolve - and not just since #SARSCoV2 has shown us at the global stage how consequential virus evolution can be for us.
In my new story in Science I got to explore how researchers are probing deeper into the past with old RNA virus genome.
So a thread…

The human #OAS1 protein restricts #SARSCoV2 replication, but #HorseshoeBat OAS1 has lost this ability. @spyroslytras @WilsonLabCVR &co resurrect the 60,000,000 yr old ancestral bat OAS1, revealing how this ancient #antiviral mechanism was lost #PLOSBiology plos.io/3N6fWPx

The Economist used global excess deaths to arrive at the true death toll from the pandemic with a 95% confidence interval.

"Although the official number of deaths caused by #COVID19 is now 7m, our single best estimate is that the actual toll is 27.5m people. We find that there is a 95% chance that the true value lies between 17.8m and 30.8m additional deaths."

A third of #US #deer have had #COVID—and they then infected humans at least 3 times. People in the US transmitted the pandemic #coronavirus to white-tailed deer at least 109 times! New study builds on data suggesting #whitetaileddeer could be a #virus reservoir. Researchers surveyed over 11,000 white-tailed deer from 26 states and DC. Of those, 31.6% had antibodies indicating a previous infection with #SARSCoV2, and 12.2% had detectable SARS-CoV-2 virus. arstechnica.com/health/2023/07…

Another crucial study from Shira Weingarten-Gabbay et al. characterizing fundamentals of #SARSCoV2 immunity:
▫️ Any protein expressed is an ‘antigenic liability’ for the virus
▫️ MHC class I and II ‘see’ different antigen repertoires
▫️ Spike is just one of many important viral proteins

Hmm...

A recent paper looked at evolution of #SARSCoV2 *within* different tissues, which might raise a few questions.

Specifically, the authors found evidence that the #virus might evolve independently in different tissues, especially in immune-privileged sites.

But that's not all...
