An Oecophylla smaragdina weaver ant hangs from the bottom of her nest, alert to any photographers that might try anything brash.

Cape Tribulation, Queensland, Australia.

I was going to go down to the workshop over lunch, but it seems my resident Pink-Tongued Lizard has other ideas.

I didn’t want to disturb him, so no workshop time over lunch.

We’ve been visited by a very tame magpie. He seems to like peanuts (chopped) but not birdseed. Technically I should feed him mealworms, or earthworms but I don’t have any handy (funny that).

Met some grey kangaroos this morning just outside Mulligan’s Flat while we were scoping out where to go tonight for our twilight wildlife tour.

Against my better judgement I attempted to rescue this lost Ringtail Possum at work today. Alas, I did not have gloves or a towel with me, and the little bugger bit me.

Oh, pretty excited, the frogs decided I weren't a threat and called for me while I was filming!

Video is shaky (handheld while kneeling in a puddle) and the light flickers 'cause it was just a cheap LED torch, but I still got a call on video. πŸ˜€

Found this Eastern Small-eyed Snake tonight under the house.

Very chill fellow, which we left alone (apart from a quick photoshoot).

Highly venomous (mytotoxic) with one recorded death in the greater brisbane area (probably quite some time ago, the Qld Museum book doesn't specify).

New King Parrot friend is now eating from my hand, much to the consternation of the cockatoos.

When we were staying in the Daintree, on two nights we dined at the restaurant attached to the Daintree Eco-Lodge. The food was delicious (but on the higher price side), but more importantly there were frogs in the and around the large pond next to the dining area. They had this peculiar call, which I sent to the FrogID team (using their app) and they identified it as Papurana daemeli: frogid.net.au/frogs/papurana-d…

Whales were seen!

We found three pods of whales, most just a mother and calf, but one pod contained mother, calf and an escort.

They were all fairly placid, no breaches or jumps, but still cool to see these huge animals relatively close (closer than the shore anyway).

Another new bird! A Great Bowerbird, spotted in Chillagoe. The male (with the pink crest) was displaying for three females in the hope of mating. He was ultimately unsuccessful on this attempt, but I’m sure he gave it another go after we left.

Not the best photos, since he was off the track and hidden in the undergrowth, but here is the Tooth-billed Bowerbird, which also only lives on and around the Atherton Tablelands. I have a sound recording of his call too, which I'll post when I can get it off the phone.

After hearing them all over the Daintree Rainforest and Atherton Tablelands, I finally saw a Victoria's Riflebird. This is a female (I heard the male, but it wasn't coming down from the tree tops).

These birds only live around this area (Atherton -> Daintree) and are one of three Qld species of Riflebirds.

A short 4 sec #video of one of the platypus. They're quite small, and don't always stay surfaced for long.

While killing time before lunch today in Mareeba we found (and patted!) some Mareeba Rock Wallabies. Big camera shots to come but here are the iPhone shots.
