That's been a fear of mine since e-books started rising in popularity.
Suddenly, a title vanishes from Amazon or Apple because someone doesn't like it. We're already going through this with language and physical books, it really won't be long before we get Moms Shilling for Fascism working to ban content from streams.
This ad is from 1975. I always thought they were the Tetley Tea Elves rather than Folk.
Mike Oldfield put out a version of the "Portsmouth", which reminds me of this advert.

Day10: Ten Days, Ten Films.
My last day!!! I hope to see some of you start a list as well!
This is a lot of fun! So long as you don’t make this too hard or too easy!
Over ten days you pick an image from a film without any title to give away where it is from, so that people can guess. You can also nominate others to do the same. That way more people are in on the game! (or not–your choice 😀 )
But remember: NO SPOILERS! If you recognise a film, don’t say what it is! Say something that indicates you know, but allows others to guess as well. Your messages then become helpful hints!

Every now and then, technologists are able to translate their strongly held beliefs into action for the benefit of society. Sometimes these actions result in new features, apps or platforms but it's especially powerful when this happens at the protocol level.
In the latest episode of Dot Social I talk with @evan about how he helped get #ActivityPub started, how it's going, and what he hopes for next. Check it out here.

Minimalist or maximalist? The life of a #microbe a mile underground

Magdalena Osburn: "The deep subsurface #biosphere is enormous; it's just a vast amount of space... Many of the #microbes we found were either minimalist: ultra-streamlined with one job that it does very well alongside a close consortium of collaborators, or it can do a little bit of everything. These maximalists are ready for every resource that comes along."

Ongoing shuffling of protein fragments diversifies core viral functions linked to interactions with bacterial hosts - Nature Communications
Proteins are composed of distinct functional domains, each serving a specific role. Here, Smug et al. show that phages are able to shuffle fragments of their proteins and this predominantly occurs in proteins involved in bacterial host interactions.Nature

From the archives of RTÉ (Ireland's national broadcaster): This show was recorded in 1962 about the establishment of the signal towers for rural radio and television broadcast.
In it an engineer named John O'Keefe described how they chose the sites for masts in an unusual way. Rather than the usual process using contour maps, they made a 3D model of Ireland and placed lights on hills to see how signal would travel. From about 20 mins in here: rte.ie/archives/2012/1022/3426…
A linked question to #mastodaoine : I know this is a long shot, but in the documentary that I linked in the last toot, I'd love to know if anyone knew/knew about the engineer John O'Keefe, pictured here.
This was in 1962, and O'Keefe must be in their 50s at the youngest, so over 100 now. More likely there might be a death notice, a living relative, or someone that worked with them. Would be grateful for any help.
This is the beginning stages of a new art project on the five regional transmitters in Ireland.
I'm already hooked on the amazing consequences of the banal publication from the European Broadcasting Conference of 1952 (Stockholm), and how frequencies were allocated to different countries.
The steel imported from Norway, electronics from Britain, and regulations decided in Sweden already spread this so far. A single object like a signal tower can have complex social and material relationships.

Data from the Kepler #space telescope suggest there may be as many as 300 million potentially habitable planets in our galaxy alone.
We may never have evidence proving whether intelligent life is somewhere out there, but - as Carl Sagan once wrote, “If it’s just us, seems like an awful waste of space.”
