As long as the weather cooperates, Iโ€™ll be pulling my kids out of school next Monday to drive east into the path of totality during the solar eclipse.

Do you have #eclipse plans?

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

I've seen a total eclipse twice in my life so we can not justify driving 900 miles to see another one.
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

It is a super hot topic here in Ohio. Totality passes over my house!

There are LOTS of naysayers in the crowd, though. During a meeting yesterday, someone mentioned that the weather was going to be bad, so they are moving it south a few miles. I thought that was the greatest thing i've yet heard.

I am taking the day off, and tyring to get a pass to get to the top of the library of our local university.

Got some epic #sea #shells - horse conch and lightening whelk I believe. Kinda cool how they spiral in different directions

There is no democracy without a commons.

This week I am grateful to be discussing #GovernableSpaces on the Frontiers of Commoning podcast with one of my heroes, David Bollier: bollier.org/blog/nathan-schneiโ€ฆ

David's books are a phenomenal intro to the power and craft of commoning.

in reply to Nathan Schneider

Also get him to join the fediverse on a nice instance and send my greetings, please.
We're close to finished publishing the patterns in French at languedespatterns.commoning.wiโ€ฆ and there's work in the horizon for debating commoning in times of platform cooperativism and capitalism platform.commoning.wiki

Both may be part of an educational project in the next year with Remix the Commons.

@boris also suggested to look at what is to be protocol commoning.

Here's a fun AI story: a security researcher noticed that large companies' AI-authored source-code repeatedly referenced a nonexistent library (an AI "hallucination"), so he created a (defanged) malicious library with that name and uploaded it, and thousands of developers automatically downloaded and incorporated it as they compiled the code:

BAM! Let's put this bill over the line!

Itโ€™s time to give Australian courts the power to break up big firms that behave badly

"The so-called Competition and Consumer Amendment (Divestiture Powers) Bill would enable courts to break up firms that misuse their substantial market power under section 46 of the Competition and Consumer Act."

Have you done any testing to ensure the apps you proclaimed so proudly in the past haven't been made abandonware by your inability to stabilize and standardize app interfaces? Your existing users are still sad that you broke PicoCMS, News, Social apps, and more, by your negligence in previous versions. Are you doing better this time?

Will we ever be able to use those abandonware apps again, or are they useless forever now?

DonesTech: La infraestructura feminista como creaciรณn de lo que nos sostiene

Why is the default for digital communities a system where community members have no power, representation, or agency?

This โ€œimplicit feudalismโ€ isnโ€™t great for moderators either โ€” theyโ€™re just vassals of the platform CEOs.

People Hate the Idea of Car-Free Cities โ€” Until They Live in One. The car-free schemes end up being so popular and work so well that โ€œonce cities make the decision to reduce or remove cars, they rarely go backโ€. wired.com/story/car-free-citieโ€ฆ
in reply to kottke.org

A car free city would be inaccessible to me due to disability. And the person who acts as a carer to me can't cope with public transport due to his own disability so even if the bus was actually wheelchair adapted it would still be inaccessible.

Hey everyone!

I'm working on a video to see what the Linux community (or at least people who follow me) actually use.

So, I created a little form, hosted on my Nextcloud (hopefully it's up to the task...)

It's only up for 2 days, so don't hesitate to share it around, it will help me "touch grass" and see if my preconceived notions are confirmed, or invalidated!

Of course, it's all anonymous, no personal data, it's just for the purposes of creating the video.

"You are not buying from a supplier, you are a raccoon digging through dumpsters for free code." is a fire quote softwaremaxims.com/blog/not-a-โ€ฆ

Honestly I love being a raccoon digging through dumpsters. I have years of experience lf finding all the good pizza and sometimes I find beans that are still unopened in a can. Usually I need to smash it with a rock (read through source code) to get at them though. ๐Ÿฆ

All this talk about #xzorcist over the weekend, I want to also point out that it's important to remember that the "software supply chain" largely does *not* exist in regards to open source, because most people have no real relationship other than parasitic consumption with the project.

@Di4na's great blog post on this topic explains it quite well: softwaremaxims.com/blog/not-a-โ€ฆ

Recently I've been receiving many "friend" requests on Facebook from new accounts by US men. The accounts usually involve a few photos of men praying and men with guns. I suspect this has to do with the up-coming US election.

@Yes - this is typical of the Trump/Republican Mob. Guns. God and Trump. (Vomit!)

I'm really appreciating this idea on FOSS from my colleague @bwagโ€”not just "free as in speech" or "free as in beer" but "free as in way." Increasingly, that is, FOSS acts like a freeway.

bowaggoner.com/blahg/2024/03-1โ€ฆ

It is infrastructure for businessโ€”free for all, but a means of profit for some. And that affects how we should build economies around it.

@bwag
This entry was edited (1 year ago)
in reply to Nathan Schneider

I agree with you.

But why emphasize "economies" in this way? Do we talk about books like this?

Practical benefits have to flow from the ethical ones or else we're in danger of playing a game where economy is on top of freedom. See China: in the 1990s there was thought that democracy would follow capitalism. But no. You can have capitalism with no Freedom.

This book cloudempires.org/ is pretty good about this issue (though doesn't discuss FOSS directly)

in reply to JK

@jamienk You don't have freeways without having an appropriate way to pay for them. Similarly, I think it matters how we pay for FOSS freewaysโ€”especially if we want to ensure that they don't become captured by those who currently pay for them.
@JK

i read @ntnsndr's new book /Governable Spaces/. it's core observation that most of online, associational life is authoritarian in governance is very smart, but i wish that he had spent more time arguing why we should prefer more democracy.
