in reply to The gentle klingon • • •I know this seems like something that might be trivial, especially to western white audiences. But words matter. And yeah okay it’s not a grievous no-no, and yeah I presented it in a sort of comical tone.
You’re not going to offend anyone by saying it or anything like that, but let me put it this way:
1. It’s weird to use it the way they did in this scene. “We’re divide and conquering on the clue?” Like imagine if Stamets said, “we’re colonizing on the clue.” Right? It’s an odd phrasing.
2. Every South Asian person I know is aware of the history of violence, subjugation and exploitation of our region and its connection to the phrase “divide and conquer.” So, yeah you won’t find the more conscientious among us casually using the phrase in routine-daily-speak ways like they did in this scene.
Does this make any sense?
