Zelda 64: Recompiled, the Majora's Mask PC port v1.1 brings various upgrades
Zelda 64: Recompiled was pretty interesting news recently, a PC port of Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask using the new N64: Recompiled tool and now a fresh update is out to improve it further.Liam Dawe (GamingOnLinux)
The EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) includes new enforcement tools to finally apply the GDPR to US tech giants.
The problem? Big Tech is actively refusing to comply.
The EFF states, "Apple and Meta are daring the EU to enforce its democratically enacted laws..."

Big Tech to EU: "Drop Dead"
The European Union’s new Digital Markets Act (DMA) is a complex, many-legged beast, but at root, it is a regulation that aims to make it easier for the public to control the technology they use and rely on.Electronic Frontier Foundation
A little fun from the FT. Apparently they don't care for American paper sizes in comparison to ISO 216 and I appreciate the poetry with which they express this. 😀
EDIT: A kind person has provided this link ft.com/content/bb9bf7c6-1785-4… although much of the other language employed smacks of desperation to claim credibility as a younger person and is quite cringeworthy in its use.

I have a lot of sympathy for students who see themselves getting bad value from their degrees & find trying to balance staying financially solvent & studying a sometimes impossible challenge;
But I also have sympathy with university staff trying to encourage in-person attendance (knowing as I do how degraded on-line learning can be).
Sadly, this crisis in higher education is driven by external forces that are pitting students & staff against each other.

Co-op tower defense beat 'em up ChronoDojo adds various Steam Deck improvements

No leaving a Steam account in a will after you die according to Valve
Doing the rounds right now is a post from Valve's Steam support, when a user asked about what would happen to their Steam account when they died and it's not great news for anyone hoping to pass on your Steam account.Liam Dawe (GamingOnLinux)
It's simply against the law, at least in Germany.
They have to give you access to the account if you can provide the necessary documents.
You will not be able to make new purchases.
Facebook tried to fight this on court and lost.

Henrietta “Etty” Darwin was born in 1843, the eldest of Charles Darwin’s daughters to reach adulthood.
She became a key editor of her father’s scientific writing, most notably The Descent of Man & Selection in Relation to Sex, published in 1871.
Charles Darwin considered Etty a “dear coadjutor, fellow-labourer” & lively member of an intellectually stimulating household. cam.ac.uk/research/news/unpubl… #science #HistoryRemix

Google promised a better search experience — now it’s telling us to put glue on our pizza
via Tom Scott
"As the AI content apocalypse rumbles on — yes, apparently Google really did suggest that people can eat glue — Facebook has announced that they're going to train models on everyone's old posts. Some people (like me) still need a Facebook account for social or business reasons, so if you're one of them and you want to opt out of that model training, the page is here. In the UK, you only need to put a simple one-sentence message like "I object to this processing" in the "how this impacts you" box and it'll be approved. In countries with less strict privacy laws, that may not be the case!"

Why is the Gaza war tearing us apart?
...
"And this perhaps leaves us with the final ethical concern. Even if it is right, sometimes, to judge people based on their group membership, and to be sensitive to the role of systemic power, people are individuals, too. It still matters how each individual is treated, not as a place-holder for a group, and not as responsible for the group’s sins.
"Just because a person might be in the right politically doesn’t mean that what they are doing for their cause is permissible morally.
"There are no easy answers here. In a multicultural and pluralistic country, we can’t prevent others having different views, and we can’t shy away from the sharp disagreements those differences will create.
"But we can at least remember we are all human, and put limits on intimidating, haranguing, ostracising and threatening others, even as we tolerate their rights to protest and criticise the things we hold most sacred."

I'd like to remind all Mastodon users that you can add a language filter to any follow relationship on Mastodon.
If you follow me and you don't speak German, you can easily remove my German posts from your timeline by adjusting the language settings.
Go to my profile page, select the dot menu and click "Change subscribed languages". Then select the languages that you speak.
This really is a hidden gem 💎 on Mastodon and not many people seem to know this feature
