Since we are an instance brought together by #scicomm on a federated network where we collectively have the power to shape culture I think we should be advocates of gently pointing out when we see folks who are not considering accessibility when tooting.

Some resources: I shared this about alt text previously with someone: https://edtechfactotum.com/adding-alt-text-and-more-to-images-in-mastodon/

And here's a nice set of tips about accessibility too https://fedi.tips/mastodon-and-fediverse-accessibility-tips/

spider but cute

Nice. πŸ™‚

Half the time, the jumping spider would jump on to my wife's camera when she's trying to get close-up macro shots. πŸ™‚

Kurt Vonnegut would have been 100 years old today, Veteran's Day. He had a lot to say about that.

Birdsite never managed to come through for this one, but maybe Mastodon will: I have an HP C3750, a PA-RISC workstation which is absolutely badass. However, despite countless attempts, I simply cannot find the right version of HP-UX to install on this machine.

Does anyone here maybe have any original media, or any tips or anything to help me along? I've been at this for over a year now.

This is the OpenPA page for this machine: openpa.net/systems/hp-visualiz…

We turned @ficusorganensis 's camera traps into near-sighted minions! Denise had a challenge when she was studying her butterflies with camera traps. The sensors picked up the butterfly movement fine, but she needed to get up close imagery of them, and the camera traps normally have a set focal length for much further away. We were thinking about hacking the lenses, but came up with an even easier fix! We hacked some cheap reading glasses (+3.00) and velcroed them on!

All,

The moment has finally arrived! πŸ₯³

@McCullohMD
@stevendavis , and I have been hard at work for the past week putting together a Mastodon instance so that we can create a backup disability and chronic illness community.

It can be found here:

disabled.social

For now, we have set up a terms of service, privacy policy, rules and best practices.

I have plans to set up a Twitter space to go through each of these with the disability community directly to add/subtract/reword things.

Hi, just showing off how strong my wheelchair and I are. 😜

have you seen fedi.tips/ they're the guide I point to when folks say they don't know what they're doing

I think as long as you're going slow, interacting with the stuff you like, filtering out the stuff you don't, and reporting the stuff that's bad you'll find a place on the fediverse

in reply to Danny (he/they)

thats what I'm trying to do and so far it has been going ok. πŸ˜€ I'm definitely taking it slow.

Many in vitro #CRISPR knock-in approaches use small molecule drugs to improve the efficiency of homology-directed repair, but these drugs may or may not be safe in vivo. In this paper from #NatureBiotechnology, the authors find that an FDA-approved therapy, fludarabine, can be used for a similar purpose. Still a long ways to go before any genetic knock-ins are routinely done in vivo, but making progress toward doing so safely: nature.com/articles/s41587-022… #science #medicine #GeneEditing #AAV

Too bad 😒 you didn't use #OpenAccess, would have loved to share the publication.

In this paper I argue that developments in STEM education research can be accelerated through the strategic use of systematic reviews, with a particular focus on #OpenScience practices and associated benefits. DM or email if you experience acces issues.

'Perhaps mourning has to do with agreeing to undergo a transformation (perhaps one should say submitting to a transformation) the full result of which one cannot know in advance. There is losing, as we know, but there is also the transformative effect of loss, and this latter cannot be charted or planned. ... One finds oneself fallen. One is exhausted but does not know why. Something is larger that one’s own deliberate plan, one’s own project, one’s own knowing and choosing'. – Judith Butler

Okay y'all, my notifications are totally blowing up. The Union Place is officially ready to get started. There's still some dust and I may have to futz with scaling, but it should be good to start receiving users!

union.place - registration is currently wide open, I will probably require approval in the not-too-distant future but I'm willing to try open to get started.

We very rarely get junk mail and so I took a quick peek at this one that turned up today.

AustPost, you may have heard if them, they’re the ones that sometimes deliver mail and parcels, are selling guitars.

Bit of a logical leap there, but there you have it.

Completely agree with this. I've long believed that our lives should be measured not by our grand accomplishments, but by the connections we make with other human beings, with nature, etc. Our lives should have an echo that lasts long after we're gone.

You've been on the ball lately, so my update process usually starts by hearing about some issue from you, and builds on whatever observations you make.

I agree it's a little odd how slow or irregular some organisations are in maintaining their news feeds. Seems there is an infection in parts of the FOSS space of the corporate mentality that saying literally anything constitutes a legally binding promise, and so some maintainers are afraid to keep their users in the loop.

Right, time for a proper re #introduction post since we're now on indiepocalypse.social. Boosts very welcome!

We're Exilian, and we're a democratic, volunteer-run community of creative geekery. We've existed at the exilian.co.uk website and forums since 2008: we support our members and the public more generally in indie and hobbyist creative or academic projects, wherever they are in the world.

To that end, we run the forum, publish articles about random interesting bits of information, host virtual meetups and events, run competitions and writing projects, and more besides. Our projects cover indie gamedev, writing, tabletop games, game modding, independent music and drama, and other eclectic oddments. We're excited to be here & would love to talk about the cool things you're making!

A short thread will follow of a few of the sorts of things we've done and supported, to give you a flavour πŸ˜€
