If you ever had a vaccine, injection or surgery, you’re indebted to the ancient & wondrous horseshoe crab.
Its blue blood contains Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL) which clumps at contact with bacterial toxins. Animals are caught for their blood to test sterility of medical equipment & injections.
Unfortunately the harvest is unsustainable & populations are in decline. An effective synthetic substitute has been around for 2 decades & we just need the biomedical industry to switch. #SharedPlanet

*Finally* finished my baby blanket! Very snug timing, because I'm driving up to see that branch of the fam this weekend. 😅
Still need to block it out and hopefully have it at least mostly dry on the trip up. It's been over a decade since I've done a blanket and I'm pretty sure I didn't block those out, so I'm following a guide. 😬 I think I had in my head that it wasn't worth blocking acrylic? Don't know if that's true, but this one is cotton.
Do You Say “Tennis Shoes”, “Gym Shoes”, or “Sneakers”?
This is a map of how people in different geographic regions of the US refer to athletic footwear, courtesy of Josh Katz, author ofkottke.org
I didn’t grow up in the US or speaking English, so when I came here I just call them as the translated version of what they are: workout shoes or running shoes (since I go run in them).
I also play tennis and so “tennis shoes” refer to a specific pair of shoes for that specific activity only.
in the north of England, it was (and still is) just ‘trainers’ whether it was a pair of regular Nikes, proper running shoes, tennis shoes or Vans.
But separate terms were football boots, golf shoes, basketball boots (even though similar styles get called trainers) and the little flat canvas rubber-soled shoes we had in PE/gym class were referred to as ‘plimsolls’.
