I often get invited to speak at bizarre meetings that are not in my field of expertise. I have often wondered what these meetings must be like, or if they really exist.

What is it like to attend a predatory conference?

in reply to Frank Aylward

If you say yes, they'll use your name to lure in other researchers. If you all were to agree, it'd become a proper conference, indistinguishable from the regular conference series organised as a business by established entities.
in reply to Albert Cardona

@albertcardona i don't think they are very targeted, though. If i agreed it seems doubtful that other people in my field would show up too - it would just be me presenting giant virus work to dentists and nephrologists in a half empty room at a Marriot

The word 'welcome' may be interpreted as 'well-come', like 'well-received' and 'well-deserved'.

However, it stems from a Germanic word meaning "desired guest".

Perhaps under the influence of French 'bienvenu' ("welcome", literally "well-come"), the perception and the form of the English word and its Germanic cognates were altered. The infographic shows how.

This is AWESOME! Herb Alpert does an updated version of Puttin' on the Ritz. Look for him making cameo appearances throughout the video.

in reply to Muse

@Karl Auerbach My productions were all profit-share independent theatre. So, even though people were getting paid, nobody was getting paid a lot. Australia and Ireland tie for the OECD countries worst at supporting their arts, followed by...the US. This meant it wasn't always easy getting crew.

I had a comedian friend who asked very nicely if he could be involved in one of my shows. When he asked most roles were already filled. I did have one role left. He is blind, but after some thought I realised he could do it, because really good listening would make it work as well.

He became in charge of the lighting.

He sat next to the sound engineer, who if anything went strange could quickly nudge the friend. Nothing did go wrong. When the music came up, the lighting came up. When he heard an actor say a line or move across the floor, he arranged different lighting. Later his experience became great material for his stand-up shows!

in reply to Muse

@Muse - When I worked on shows I always refused to take a paycheck. Not that I was paid very much, I think that it was about $0.50/hour or something like that. Certainly not union scale.

(Now we just write checks - although a couple weeks back I helped move about 450 seats out from storage. Oh, my aching back!.)

@Muse

In collaboration with Harrison Consoles, happy to see the release of Harrison LiveTrax, the latest DAW in the Ardour family. LiveTrax is a DAW focused on the needs of live/front-of-house work. Not exactly unrelated to Waves Tracks Live from 2015, it has nearly a decade of improvements to the codebase and includes several additional features that we felt FOH folks would benefit from.

$14.99 over here: store.harrisonaudio.com/all-pr… for Linux, macOS and Windows.

Obviously, it remains GPL'ed.

The unexpected poetry of PhD acknowledgements

"Not many people will read your PhD thesis, but if you completed your doctoral research at the Australian National University College of Science, then Tabitha Carvan has probably read one small part of it.
