The political system of sortition may seem a little exotic to some people. When you experience it in action, I find it seems every day and sensible. Scotland has a house of sortition called the Citizens Assembly. The last council region I lived in regularly called citizens assemblies to consult on public projects, so that they suited the citizens who live there.

When I was a kid in the US people freaked out about socialism, and yet we still have a socialised public education system. Here in Australia we have socialised medicine, we are the envy of the US for that. Most people haven't heard of sortition, but it does seem alien until you realise all the places where it already exists and works quite well.

Here is a BBC report on Scotland's experiment with sortition.

in reply to Muse

ah ok... I was thinking about people getting put into politician positions this way
in reply to Muse

They are a replacement for politicians, but the people do not have a career out of it. They don't have to convince wealthy people to give them donations to run for office. They don't have to make empty promises to attract the most votes. There is no popularity contest. Everyone votes eventually in a Citizens Assembly. It's pure democracy.

Making professional television and films is expensive. As such anyone who doesn't have big money behind them is most often squeezed out of the game. Those at the top of society are the ones who have the means to select what is and is not made and how. A certain amount of liberal views are tolerated if they bring in audiences and money.

Not all British TV and film makes it to the US, though more is these days. Usually, it's those works that glamorise aristocracy. From the outside everything looks like it is essentially working just fine under a British hierarchy.

BUT despite the name, the "United Kingdom" is not united at all. It is a collection of densely populated islands that are divided by culture, language, and politics. England is still a colonial power, but it robs their neighbours rather than India these days.

These letters in The National are highly enlightening.

Could using US cloud services to handle European personal data become illegal at any moment? 🤨

The EU-US Data Privacy Framework is at risk. 🚨 Is it high time we moved away from US cloud providers?

In our new article, we’re on a quest for answers.

in reply to Nextcloud 📱☁️💻

factually it already IS illegal for #EU companies, violating #GDPR... Its just that everyone is so deeply invested in US services (including the EU governing bodies) that they are all looking at each other waiting for someone at National or EU level take the lead and make the first move. Chicken and the egg problem. How to solve it? Take your losses, smash the egg and #unplugtrump

Truly my greatest professional joy is that, not only did we get to build a tool to help people stop AI bots from scraping up their work without consent, I was able to have our in-house artist create a SLOP sign to mark the spot where the bots expire.

If you are a non-profit or open source project that does good internet stuff, we’ll protect you for free. If not, then you can pay us money and we will hook you up. Either way, good tools to put you in control over the bots. fastly.com/blog/take-back-cont…

From the first #EarthDay: Students in St. Louis marched wearing masks to protest smog and air pollution.

The inaugural 1970 protests drew millions, and led to the creation of the EPA and clean air standards.

With science under greater attack than ever, we need more of this activism today!
