I love that the music (criticism) website Hearing Things is now a 100% writer-owned co-op. They started with 50/50 startup capital and last year week emailed their subscribers to confirm they've paid out their investor(s?). They have no advertising and they don't collect data to sell. They don't need to demonstrate ROI or a year-on-year EBITDA. They don't need to grow even, tho I'm sure they'd appreciate getting paid more, having more options. I still love all of this.

Hello! I’m new here. I’m a conceptual/surrealist Ugandan photographer & multi-inter-disciplinary artist based on occupied Lenape land (NYC).

I tend to hide my art and hide as an artist but I’m trying to get back into it, and put myself out there.

Excited to connect with other artists, & also showcase my work on here! 🍉

This piece is currently untitled.

I've been really appreciating this new @mitpress book by Ashley Cordes: "Indigenous Currencies." It explores long histories of Indigenous monetary cultures and, from them, rewrites the history of cryptocurrencies. mitpress.mit.edu/9780262552530…

I would love to see a Linux native version.

Did see that they recommended for Mac at least GTX 1060, there never been a Mac released with GTX 1060 as far as I know and I think the nvidia driver more or less been phased out in MacOS, so I guess they promote hackintosh.

It should be noted that SpacetimeDB is explicitly not open:

SpacetimeDB is licensed under the BSL 1.1 license. This is not an open source or free software license, however, it converts to the AGPL v3.0 license with a linking exception after a few years.

An almost first party, de-bloated windows gaming handheld? That could actually pack a punch. Even if the small version looks quite similar in performance to the deck.

> Government considers social media time limits for children

Here we go again: an Internet watershed...

I wonder how the government proposes to identify "social media apps" for the (alleged) two hour time limit.

Per service? Or will service providers have to exchange information with each other as to how much time has elapsed?

Will they name which service providers they actually mean (Meta , TikTok etc.)?

in reply to Neil Brown

What happened with the idea of parents being responsible for parenting? Why is the government doing it now?
in reply to Eugen Rochko

it's just using "protect children" as an excuse to curb online dissent. That way they can control what people post online and if you're against that kind of censorship and control they can point fingers at you for "not caring about children's safety". It's the oldest trick in the book and people keep falling for it.

As you said, the real problem is parents not being responsible with how their kids interact with the internet.

in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron parents are too busy looking at their phones. Maybe they need time limits 😂
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron The same way that the government legislate on lots of things which are harmful to children.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

I remember being very struck by this from the then Children's Commissioner in Dec 2020.

"So, does the institution always need to be only the host? If you have an institution where the members of it are also its voices [-->] and performers, could that lead to solidarities between artists and institutional workers? What happens when there's not a clear division between those positions? Would an artist we invite into the organisation then work together as a peer with the organisation?"

— Susannah Haslam: Infrastructuring : Four Conversations on Cultural, pp. 49-50

This answer resonates with me, in response to a comment about 'institution-making' and spoken by interviewee John Bingham-Hall.

Mastodon/Activity Pub question:

As far as I can tell mastodon posts are expected to have a rich text / html-subset representation i.e. docs.joinmastodon.org/spec/act…)

I'm writing a tiny activity pub service, mastodon is currently stripping out all html tags when displaying posts from my dev account (see e.g. mastodon.social/@sarah@tap.res…), plain text posts work fine (see e.g. mastodon.social/@sarah@tap.res…)

I'm attempting to work out why that is the case, but this is proving to be a hard thing to search for.

in reply to Sarah Jamie Lewis

I see `<p>Mastodon...` in the database. Is there a chance there was a HTML encoding issue in the payload your server sent us? In the JSON representation I can fetch right now, I see `<p>Mastodon...` correctly.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron Thanks for taking a look, and yes there was indeed an issue with the formatting ( mastodon.social/@sarahjamielew…)

The idea of art being some elitist privileged activity that needs to be democratized (genAI bro argument) is funny to me.

I had no problem finding art supplies in rural Tunisia and India. My friend TomTom paints on cereal boxes because he can't afford a sketchbook and still does amazing art.

If you have a mind, you can make art.
