Jesus fucking Christ, I'd forgotten how genuinely awful open source graphics and design apps are at, well everything, but specifically text design. Undo, redo, copy, and paste regularly broken.

Then when you decide to do things manually you get this shit

in reply to Baldur Bjarnason

Please explain to me how complaining about free software that countless people like myself contributed to and calling it awful and shit don't make you a d*#k but pointing that out to you makes me d#*k?
in reply to Moha

You came into my mentions and spoke to me specifically and directly. That's a major difference

Open source design and photography software are notoriously resistant to feedback about design, usability, and bugs, even to the point of responding with outright hostility. I've been burned several times before

There's plenty of great open source software that pays attention to UX and listens to end users. But there is something specifically dysfunctional in design and photography OSS

in reply to Baldur Bjarnason

Maybe a more constructive way is to pay them first and then expect them to get better? I mean these people work on these apps primarily for free, so don't call their enthusiasm and hard work shit please, be more supportive.
in reply to Baldur Bjarnason

I understand, it's not like I didn't ever have my struggles with oss. But also the community matters, maybe there is a reason some oss got better eg. Blender or Kdenlive and some not much.

Regardless, it's always fair to point out the issues or complain about them but devaluing the work of 10s or 100s of developers is not fair IMHO.

Rob Reiner and his Wife Dead...

People Magazine Sources say that they were Killed By His Son?

This is Shocking....

#OurModernTimes #RobReiner

in reply to Joseph Teller

We've been robbed. He was 78 and could have died at any moment to natural causes. However, murder robbed us of whatever time he had left and the marvelous contributions he could have made.
in reply to Joseph Teller

We lost a voice of reason for certain. I read how he and his wife died. His son deserves life in jail or worse for such a horrible way to kill his parents.

many of 15 points are not OK from home users point of view. However the Linux adversarys are sitting in their home offices beeing on duty times mostly from 9 to 5. And their social professional environment doesnt leave any chance to switch their OS.
in reply to It's FOSS

The problems of Linux are the lack of the proprietary software most people use and that are incompatible with the alternatives (such as MS Office or Adobe products) and less stability in terms of OS and drivers (Nvidia being of the problems). Also, some tools are more complicated on Linux, like LM Studio.

Although modern distros offer fancy GUIs and installers, sometimes you have to use the terminal.

#RunnersOfMastodon, now is the time to support the *many* runners who are close to reaching their goals for 2026 and can use some last-minute encouragment.

A few examples:
- @pfernandes, who is two HMs away from #52weeks52halfmarathons
- @steveroyle, who just needs 117k more
- @sebastianhahn, who aims at a crazy 10,000k and has a good shot at actually succeeding

There are many more of you out there. (Who did I miss?) #Running, you are all winning!

See you on the next starting lines.

in reply to Moha

@boynux

That is a terrific goal!

One of my own 2026 goals is a sub-4:07 marathon, so you're way ahead of me already. You can do it!

buytwitter.org/
I made a joke a while back about buying enough shares of Meta to cover WhatsApp, and donating them to the Signal foundation.
But seeing this buyTwitter thing makes it seem more serious.
Would it be possible to raise enough money to do that?
in reply to Light

I don't think so. You can't really gain power over a subsidiary that way. And Zuckerberg had controlling voting rights over Meta.

...and another one, and another one.

Please could we have a distro that, at least, simplifies the task of porting or reinstalling dozens of applications every time you distro-hop?

A couple of my troubles:

Even plain Ubuntu let me down with the appimage of the free version of the bibliographic system Mendeley (vital for some of us). Mint doesn't like Snap, and I won't even mention Flatpak.

Ubuntu offers full LaTeX, but it isn't full, missing some Tikz bits. You have to go to tug.org, which installs then tells you you have to set your own paths. Look up how to do that & find 100s of geek discussions on which obscure config files not to modify.

Why does every commercial depiction of honey involve one of these?
Literally nobody has ever seen one of these in real life
in reply to Matt Hall

I have seen these in real life all my life and I own one. They’re often sold among other wooden utensils at fairs and markets.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

This is interesting to me. I grew up and and live in the US. Honey is most often acquired at a supermarket in a plastic container shaped like a bear.

You _squeeze_ the container to dispense the honey.

No spoons, no wands. Just honey.

So... The wand seems _amazingly_ superfluous to me. I literally don't understand the appeal.

in reply to Matt Hall

I'm not surprised. In Germany it's more common to buy honey in jars.
in reply to Matt Hall

My grandparents used one, and yes they kept fresh honey from a local beekeeper. But yeah, commercial honey killed the charm with plastic bottles. Go check out your local farmers market, you can usually find fresh honey and utensils there.
in reply to FeloniousPunk

This might sound snotty or obtuse, I don't mean it to, I understand the appeal of fresh honey (it's my preference) but I still can't quite grok the utensils... What's the advantage of the wand over say... A spoon or just pouring from the jar and wiping the lip of the jar when finished?

I feel like I'm genuinely _missing_ something.

in reply to Matt Hall

Why have a cake fork when there's the dinner fork, or the table spoon when there's the tea spoon--part tradition, part adaptation. This particular utsensil is good at keeping the honey from dripping off while you're transferring it to your mug.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

Sure, I understand the concepts of traditional tools/utensils etc. I don't especially adapt to them. It's more the utility that I was curious about.

Thanks for the reply!

why do ur gingerbread cookies look more pale, then mine? and it's not even the baking part, cause my dough is also (way) darker than this
in reply to Eugen Rochko

the guardian (the newspaper) recipe, i'm pretty sure

225g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra to grease
340g soft brown sugar
1 egg
340g plain flour
1 tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
1½ tsp grated nutmeg
1½ tsp ground cloves
2 tsp ground cinnamon
3 tsp ground ginger
75g crystallised ginger or dried apricots, finely chopped

in reply to Drew Smirnoff

I use the recipe from Giallo Zafferano with about half as much butter and sugar, but probably the main reason is I used white sugar.
