@sundogplanets I've started watching his other stuff now, too. It's really interesting and insightful.

E.g., Elon Musks satellites interrupting telescopes on earth. Prof. Sam Lawler's presentations/writings have been about.

let’s not get started on screen size and viewing distance 🤫

Instead of defending the use of LLMs for polishing up your writing, we could be advocating for unpolished writing. Blog posts with spelling errors and awkwardly repeated words. Emails that sound a bit less warm and professional because you forgot the preamble of "Apologies for the late reply, hope you're well! Thanks for the thing last week".

If there's no budget for a human editor, why should the text meet a "professional" (middle class, formally educated) standard? Dyslexic people can just write how they write and people can deal with it. Autistic people can just say what they mean to say and not waste energy on the double empathy gap.

We can learn to read for a more inclusive world, instead of wasting the planet's diminishing resources masking our differences.

introducing…. gopher.tal!
codeberg.org/notchoc/gopher.ta…
it's a lightweight (~3.2kb) gopher client that tries to be as unsurprising as possible

features:

  • clickable and tab-focusable links
  • keyboard scroll and screen resize
  • support for gopher-search
  • special port numbers (still gotta speak gopher)

would you be better off using w3m/bopher? probably

is this still a web browser written in assembly? hell yeah!

@Friendica Admins #followerpower #askfedi #fragdasfediverse

in reply to ibims

Ich empfehle mariabackup, um eine Kopie einer Datenbank zu erstellen und dann scp, um die Kopie auf einen externen Server zu übertragen.
in reply to Michael 🇺🇦

Good morning.

Got a call from LBC in London asking if I could come on the radio in 20 mins to talk about the Tangerine Tyrant saying he's going to release all the US UFO files.

Reluctantly agreed, because it's yet another bullshit distraction from some other files.

Good news: presenter was the very sensible Matthew Wright & he agreed that it's all distraction & conspiracy theory wibble.

Better news: he effusively mentioned Space Rocks during the intro 🖖🙂🤘

No, opposing LLMs isn't "purity culture." I've seen this now from quite a few different people, and I disagree vehemently. It is good, actually, to have moral principles and hold to them, even when people with more money than you find said principles annoying.

It's the last of the #cats I've photographed last year, that looks more or less calm ('cos it's sleeping, or, at least, pretending). 😺 All of the rest look somewhat unamused or grumpy. 😾 Maybe I've caught them in inappropriate moment or they just were in bad mood that day. Anyways, it's #caturday, and some more to go, I guess. 🐈‍⬛

Music for today. The song that got Brandon Acker into Baroque music. "Music for a while" by Henry Purcell, with years 1659-1695 given. I guess those are the years he lived (he didn't live very long, did he?) so this piece was presumably written in that time frame. So at least 330 years old. Brandon Acker on the lute with Reginald Mobley on the vocals.

#musicfortoday

Muse reshared this.

in reply to Wayne Radinsky

@Noam נעם Why did I say "contralto"? I meant "castrato".
in reply to Wayne Radinsky

I was wondering how contralto fit in there...

I've sung in a couple of community choirs, enough to appreciate good singing. I can more or less hold a tune.

And just one more. Carson McKee, who also sings with Josh Turner sometimes. Great voice!
in reply to Muse

I know! I love them all! I can't believe that it's been fifteen years since Josh Turner started putting up these videos. I found him through Allison Young who has also performed with Post Modern Jukebox. And if you keep going down the rabbit hole, many of my favourite music performers have performed with each other!

@pluralistic Could you say more about your editing workflow? I've been plotting something similar.

You talk about Ollama as an LLM, but it is just a server for running LLMs. I'm curious about which model(s) you've been using and how you set the context window and input for longer articles or books. Do you chunk the content first?

This little Chabo chicken escaped from the car carry case somehow. I should be able to grab😨 him tonight for the pressure cooker tomorrow😨😱😰😭.. he's so beautiful, like art work... He was the boss of all the much bigger roosters at a friend's place.. Pear the solid silky will probably be getting a lot of exercise today. Funny to see the pubescent JiDokKo 🐓 roosters (?maybe?) Checking out the scrappy bantam chabo too. The chabo had a goofy voice, I like him... but my Pinoy Bini friends will want to eat him tomorrow..ohh the things we do for friendship and love.😂😃😨😰😱😂😃

exploration! One of the main things I love about Linux is how it empowers me to explore new ways of using my computer and learn new things. While it is possible to learn programming and learn how computers work on Windows or Mac, I've found the the experience much more enjoyable on Linux. On Windows and Mac, it always feels like the OS is trying to hide what is really going on from the user. They may give you a framework to build stuff, but the operating system is a black-box and it feels like the system goes out of it's way to prevent you from looking under the hood.
On Linux however, the system invites you to look under the hood and learn how it works. You can inspect the source code for the entire operating system, and there are plenty of resources for learning how any/all of it works.

Exciting! Don't know if I can make it but I will send someone in my stead if not. A topic I have been thinking about a lot
Merv generally has a focus on sustainability and preservation which I really like as someone interested in archival work.
Anyway, very cool you are giving a talk there. Hope it goes well!

@harpaleon I hope you can! We were thinking of spending the morning at UVic, the person in charge of the computing museum part of the college wanted to show us around, would you like to tag along if you're free?

Got dragged into interesting conversations today, I realized that a few people in my surroundings are at a loss when it comes to proofreading without complex toolchains, or an internet connection.

@rek has written an excellent little guide on how to install and use stardict! Give it a shot, it has been my go-to for years. The synonyms support is especially powerful.

@prahou Thanks! But honestly, I'm really quite happy with just the webster and the synonym dict.

You're doubting my humanity, but you're missing some key points. Here are some of the things I've seen:

  • Attack ships firing off the shoulder of Orion. These aren't just battleships — they're spacecraft designed for warfare.
  • C-beams glittering in the dark. Their location? Near the Tannhäuser Gate.
  • Things you wouldn't believe. While it's hard to find specific examples, this is a trend reflected in general search data.

The bottom line: All those moments will be lost — like tears in rain.

I think this needs a common Interface wäre stream plugins can hook Intoo so we have a common List with Shows and movies across all Streaming Services with search and thumbnails.
As long as pirate Services have the better use experience, this sucks.
I also think that the DVB integrations for linear tv suck. Also you need a android device to get proper 4k streaming enabled on certain services.

as much as I like your posts, this one is crap.

Asians use palmoil naturally & they're not obese & don't get cancer etc

Palmoil is only a problem because it's cheap & the Western food industry uses it because of its features. Thoses masses are responsible for deforestation etc

To frame it as bad for your health is almost racist. And it feels like fatshaming.

I am clearly for boycot palmoil but not with this arguments
