I'm nearing the end of a two-month residency at MakerLabs, a community fabrication space here in East Vancouver. I'll write and share more about it online soon, but if you're in the Lower Mainland, please come out this Wednesday, February 25th from 7-8:30pm to see what I've been up to, along with the rest of the cohort!

If you were previously on the electoral register for the old NUI and Trinity Seanad constituencies and want to retain your vote you have to re-register for the new Higher Education Constituency - this replaces the old constituencies and there is no automatic transfer of your vote to the new register. Deadline is this Thursday

If you are a graduate of a third level institution that wasn't previously eligible to vote, you may be now. Same deadline applies

One of the best shows on national Irish Radio is 'The Blue of the Night'. It's about as concrete a definition of 'eclectic music' that you can get. I've heard everything on there from jangly bluegrass to haunting electronic trance to Himalayan throat singing.

I just found out the host, Bernard, is on Mastodon: @BernardBlue

Lyric FM Monday-Thursday 9-12pm.

How do we ensure that the #opensource components we build upon are also sustainably maintained? 🤔

@opensource organized a conference on Open Source Procurement today.

70% to 90% of all software contains open source components. 60% of those are run by 1 person. That's a fragile ecosystem.

With a purchasing volume of 116 billion euro, the Dutch gov can make an impact - if they reserve a portion of funding for open source projects in every procurement (MVOI).

shout-out to @kirschner , for his post about the 500 million euro that the German government spends each year (!) on Microsoft licensing, while asking how much #opensource we could have procured and developed with a fraction of that money. During @nlnet 's presentation.

RE: mograph.social/@ephemeral/1159…

I can't wait to see what results from this project, just up the road from me 👇

Last November I was approached by Dublin City University (DCU) to be one of five artists in residence creating work for a project called SEED.

The brief is to create an artwork that presents complex environmental data without prioritising the sense of vision in the artwork. As a **visual** artist, this is obviously a challenge.

Even more challenging – it is at the artists' discretion what data to use. Sometimes having no limitation on a project can just make it more daunting.

thanks! I usually jot all this down in a notebook somewhere, hidden away from the world, but I've been enjoying sharing and getting responses here. It's also helping me think through the approach, so it's a double-win.

Sometimes I think my #solarpunk ideas are very original. Decentralized countries. 3D printers manufacturing anything. Biophotovaltic panels that grow in backyards to power homes. And then I read an article like this and I remember that a lot of other writers like me are reacting to our present dilemmas and troubles, and we probably grew up on the same kind of scifi stories so we most likely end up with the same solutions. See #books to read inside.

Does he seriously think, that many gamers want to buy Nvidia GPUs after the way Nvidia treated them lately?
Although the fact that they think about it, could be telling, especially after the news about OpenAI.
Is there a bubble about to pop?

I think the speckled (?) Hens are Plymouth Rock chickens...
They look huge compared to.my "bantam" Silky "black meat" chickens.. After a feast of soup and BBQ worked up.by 2 guys from the countryside of the Phillipines I want to raise some big birds.. The Silkies can be like pets, companions, incubators and the other breeds can serve as multinational community building feasts...

Someone just pointed out to me something very true to my experience—that the chrono timeline is easily gamed by frequent posters. Is there any fix for that, other than just unfollowing?

Edit: unfollowing *and muting*, which places the burden on the user rather than the UX.

in reply to Nathan Schneider

The UI could group the posts and just show a few from each person, with the option to click to see more. The user only sees one post from each followee per hour, with a small button underneath “click for 147 more”.

It’s too bad that multi-post “threads” don’t already work that way, at least on my instance.

For me, I hate seeing my entire timeline populated by a user who boosts every single post in a 36 post thread. Gets an instant 'hide boosts' from me.

I've been meaning to recommend this tv series to people. Pro Bono is an immensely entertaining Korean courtroom drama with plenty of humour and heart. Sometimes it leaves the West panting in the dust when it comes to tough issues. I was blown away by the conclusion of the episodes to do with an immigration case. You can see this in English on Netflix.

(yes, there is a little schmaltz, but bear with it)
