If you've made a Glitch.com app using the Twitter API, there's no doubt that their announcement of ending free API access will impact you โ€“ we're just not sure how yet and are following along with you all to find out what this will look like.

That means there's no better time than right now to use the apps that made Twitter a community-built experience, like @Luca's fedifinder.glitch.me, before API support goes away.

Bad news aside โ€“ we're really excited about the fediverse and being on here with you all. We've already seen immense amounts of creativity and tooling built on Glitch to grow this community. We can't wait to share, learn and educate with the community in this exciting space. More to come here very soon!

By the way, in conclusion, hence, relatedly...we're so so proud of Fastly's Fast Forward program for its support of the Mastodon project among so many other great open source projects!

It's so cold in New England right now that "the troposphere could dip below the summit of Mount Washington", which would then be briefly located *in the stratosphere*. WHAT?! This is literally a plot point in The Day After Tomorrow. wmur.com/article/mount-washingโ€ฆ
in reply to kottke.org

Thus making, momentarily, Las Vegas and Mount Washington the only two places in the world where you can walk to the Stratosphere (unless it's cold enough at Everest), and indeed, Mount Washington will become, momentarily, the only place in the world it will be possible to walk to the Stratosphere without being or accompanying a massive blowhard.

With #ValentinesDay around the corner, would fellow #science & #culture nerds on #Mastodon be interested in a few facts & stories from the book?

In eastern Congo, a large, slow-moving landslide is accelerating and putting a community at risk. A new NASA study using satellite data shows how changing water usage in the city of Bukavu influences land movements near and just below the surface.

More: go.nasa.gov/3HWeEob

In these visualizations, strain rates indicate zones of stretching, shearing, and shortening at the landslide surface. NISAR, a mission set to launch in 2024, could help provide even better information on these processes.

This is a welcome antidote to the usual innovation amnesia.

in reply to Nathan Schneider

This is good. The best suggestion I've heard is to make assignments where students are required to use ChatGPT and then verify all the factual assertions in the paper & footnote them (largely they'll have to correct the outright falsehoods in it)
in reply to Drew Kadel

@DrewKadel tho that requires students to make an account sharing their personal info with an external organization, which I am committed to not doing.
