The extreme heat has devastated corals. As a former marine scientist, this is a truly heartbreaking read:

“The coral didn’t even have a chance to bleach, it just died. It just felt like, ‘Oh my God, we’re in the apocalypse.’ What’s happening?”

nytimes.com/2023/07/31/climate…

“Demand #climate action right now. Not in a year, not tomorrow, right now. Actually yesterday.”

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

this really hurts to read 😭 something about corals devastation gets me feeling really hurt

I have recently finished Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr. EXCELLENT! Definitely solarpunk, but not sold that way in order to garner a larger audience. People have been lauding it as a book in praise of books. I would say that it is a book about human memory and the need to be humane. Personally, I would sell it as a Dr Who plot for grown-ups! XD

I am now reading The Dawn of Everything by David Graeber and David Wengrow. I am grateful to see someone re-examine history in this way. We have had many recent archeological and anthropological findings about our pasts that just don't make it into classroom history books. These classroom books perpetuate received knowledge from the likes of Hobbes and Rousseau. I regularly rail against the same thing happening in English departments where much of what we learn about literature is about grand suppositions made 100-1000 years ago without any research to ground them in reality. "If Aristotle said it, it must be true!"

@Kenny Chaffin It felt a little like he was channelling Richard Powers, don't you think?

I signed up to again host a grad student or postdoc from the global south to be a member of our zoom-based weekly lab meetings. It's a great idea! smbevirtual.github.io/

Human microbiome myths and misconceptions

Two myths to highlight:

"We need standardized methodologies"

"Most of the human microbiota is 'unculturable'"

True, unculturable taxa are a minority in the human microbiome now (in westernized guts it's mostly just the Melainabacteria left, I think)

In August we are launching a series of artist-hosted social events every Thursday evening. These will be part of the project waking.land/ exploring loss and 'grievability' through the nearby site of Benbo Mountain.

Each week a different artist or group will hold space, creating a social environment to consider different research topics related to the project.

The project is a partnership with the Glens Centre supported by the Irish Hospice Foundation.

Test images from @esa's Euclid are promising greatness. Here, light is separated by wavelength, so each streak is one star or galaxy! This helps determine what each is made of, and evaluate its distance. Euclid also has @nasa instruments and participation. esa.int/Science_Exploration/Sp…

Exoplanets are far away and hard to see, especially next to much bigger and brighter stars. One way to spot them, though, is to look to their stars. An orbiting exoplanet can change the star's light. go.nasa.gov/323Oue0

in reply to Sursiendo

in reply to Sursiendo

La producción y el consumo masivos, las estrategias de diseño y normativas adoptadas por las empresas y apoyadas por los gobiernos, están llevando a la degradación ambiental y a injusticias sociales sin precedentes.

Before 1964, we had no close-up photos of the Moon, and it wasn't known if astronauts could feasibly land on its surface. That changed when Ranger 7 sent back 4,316 images of the lunar surface before impacting the Moon #OTD in 1964.

Compare Webb’s look at NGC 6822 with its NIRCam instrument versus its MIRI instrument. NIRCam (left) peers through gas and dust, spotlighting countless stars. Meanwhile, MIRI (right) focuses on the galactic dust. Slide between the two views here: esawebb.org/images/comparisons…

Space isn’t always metal.

NGC 6822, a galactic neighbor captured by Webb, has unusually low metallicity, meaning it doesn’t have much in the way of elements heavier than hydrogen and helium. This image combines Webb’s views in near and mid-infrared light: esawebb.org/images/potm2307a/

Last Wednesday I ran @joelnitta's excellent "Introduction to Targets" workshop and taught around 15 people how to write workflows in R. I also tested out some bonus content about running targets on Slurm/HPC which I hope to get included in the workshop eventually.

All the feedback was positive, so I recommend giving it a shot if you're interested in teaching Targets at your organization!
