Mike Pence on That Time When the Insurrectionists Wanted to Hang Him. "I was honored to be a part of the discourse that day. You see, democracy is messy." mcsweeneys.net/articles/mike-p…
in reply to kottke.org

If ol' Mikey gets his way, democracy will get a lot messier and not in a way that's any better for him personally
in reply to kottke.org

Founding fathers of usa were all against democracy because just like pence they were confusing democracy and riot, insurection, etc.

Even referencing democracy as the tyranny of the poor.

don't bother linking anything healthline-affiliated as they straight up block access if you don't want privacy-invading trackers for ad targeting. Then have the sheer brass to say "If you don't like us blocking you over there in the EU, go ahead and abolish the GDPR".

There's a lot of interest in #GodotEngine today, so here's my perspective & advice, as the tech lead on Cassette Beasts, a 2.5D open world RPG that shipped this year on Steam, Switch and Xbox, using Godot 3.5. 🧵

First: I've not used Unity (or Unreal) for more than just trivial experiments, so I can't provide direct comparisons. But there are still a few general points I can make.

Also: I will never recommend switching engine mid-project. If you're gonna switch, do it between projects.

After thinking it over all week and talking to a bunch of peers, I've made up my mind. Goodbye Twitter. Also, I think it lots more journalists decided to go (it's surprising how many good folks are still there, as I detail), a big chunk of the advocacy sector would leave too. It's time. open.substack.com/pub/theconne…

Thanks for this thoughtful process. I really hope we can build critical mass in open spaces like this one.

I wonder if my willingness to focus energy here is based on no longer being an attention-focused journalist; as an academic I can afford to be insular and irrelevant:)

Fuck it. #YOLO

#Bluesky continues to be entirely non-responsive to the numerous security vulnerabilities I've reported to them, so I spent the evening writing up a nice README and a framework with exploit modules, and just made it all public.

Have fun.

Seems that everyone is talking about game libraries and engines after the Unity pricing news. For years I've slowly been developing my own game library called Chickadee. It's kinda like Love2D but it also supports 3D and vector graphics and has other neat features like coroutines for scripting. It's all work-in-progress and less polished than any well-known library, but if this kind of thing interests you I would love to have more collaborators since I've been mostly working by myself with the occasional bug report or patch from others. There's certainly not a shortage of things to do. If there is interest then I can move the repo off of my personal server and onto a real Git hosting platform with an issue tracker and stuff.

And here are a couple of small games I've made with Chickadee:

haha i tried unity in game programming school THIRTEEN years ago.

It sucked so much I quit that school.

Hail Godot!

And hail people who make their own engines, they're a dying species and they need to come back!

Go go go ogre3d and all other 3d engines!

Student-Built EV Car Goes 0-62 mph in Record 0.956 Seconds. It reached that speed in just 40 feet and obliterated the old record of 1.46 seconds. kottke.org/23/09/ev-goes-0-62-…
in reply to kottke.org

That’s 2.8 g in forward acceleration.

If the car were dropped off a building, it would accelerate roughly one third as much.

know it's not a fair comparison, but relative to JavaScript, I thoroughly appreciate that Lua moves slowly as a language. Severely reduces maintenance burden and it's more conducive to longer-applicable content (especially important in the context of learning).

The philosophy is probably best summarized by Roberto's talk, How Much Does It Cost

in reply to Andrew Chou

curious I've come into contact with Lua before but I've never used it, I'm curious now... in grad school a prof said that as (biological) science researchers without a formal cs training we might find benefit from flitting around to use whatever language worked for us in the moment. Different languages = different strengths. + research software is a tangle of many fragile projects that were made without thinking about longevity so often workflows have to stitch together things.

I hope this will make people try Godot. I think this year is being great: Twitter sucks now, Mastodon has a little more visibility. Reddit API changes happened, Lemmy is now being used for some communities I'm part of. Microsoft putting ads on Windows 11, maybe more people going to Linux (eventually)?

Back in 2019 Unity said "When you obtain a version of Unity, and don’t upgrade your project, we think you should be able to stick to that version of the TOS."

Of course now the GitHub link for the TOS changes is dead, gone. So much for that then 🤷‍♂️
