Well done to the Carpentries for not only leaving Twitter (see hachyderm.io/@thecarpentries/1…) but also for developing jointly with rOpenSci a Mastodon Quick Start Guide to support everyone willing to move to Mastodon: doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.1001985…

Last year we released a statement in which we said we will continue “to monitor changes at Twitter in conjunction with internal discussions about whether our presence on the platform will continue.”

We now announce that as of today, 20 October 2023, all our #socialmedia engagements will be from this Mastodon account, as well as LinkedIn and YouTube, and none from our 5 #Twitter / X accounts.

Find out about these changes and more here: carpentries.org/blog/2023/10/a…

I really need to do a better job at preparing myself to listen to amazing music. I listened to this album dn the morning, the watched the videos over lunch, and now I'm fucked up for the day. Just want to sleep, because it's not going to get better.

Great work! 🙂 Regarding the "Finding and Building Your Community" section, for academic communities I have found great value in public opt-in lists like these: nathanlesage.github.io/academi… (I run one of them myself.) If you're looking for academics to follow, you can also try find.sciences.social!

These guys are insane, this might be the first time you have noticed this, but it's always been true. Insanity is a part of the belief system of some socialists, the is a bad history to this

A few glitches here and there, but I can really see it as as new way to deploy Jupyter Notebooks.

Nice-looking project and despite the warnings on the GitHub site I couldn't resist trying it out. Installing in a conda env through pip did produce some problems; perhaps a guide to contributing and setting up a dev environment for this would be a good addition to the README? Feel free to add advice on how folks can help.
in reply to Alan Sill

@AlanSill Thanks, it's getting close to being usable so I'll polish it and make a release soon.

narrowboatworld.com/14916-net-… the mess we have made on the water from 40 years of worshipping neoliberalism. The experiment has failed, and this ideology is dead. When do we lift our heads #climatchaos #deathcult
in reply to hamish campbell

It appears to me that the logic does not follow? Help me understand.

My understanding is that neoliberalism is characterised by free markets, deregulation, privatization, globalization, individualism, and monetary policy.

Neither neoliberalism nor climate caused changes to building codes to ensure new buildings are safer or inflation driven largely by authoritarian covid lockdowns and command and control economic actions by western nations taken as a result, and I'm unsure of how neoliberalism or climate change would be the cause of lower than expected donations.

Realistically, the past 50 years have seen many waterways get much much better in the west.

in reply to sj_zero

@sj_zero

Under capitalism (and neoliberalism is extreme capitalism) everything has a price, and thus must be paid for. In general, waterways are "commons" thus do not have prices for meany things, or are cross subsidized by meany stakeholders. Over the last 40 years we have tried (and often failed) to bring this "price logic" to enclose the water "commons" this is going through a new wave in the UK lead by #CRT and #mainstreaming thinking.

It's making a mess.

One of the reasons I like arthropods more than vertebrates, is there is just so much more diversity. You can read about a new weird bug or sponge every day for the rest of your life. With vertebrates it's just like everything is either a cute fuzzy, scary fuzzy, ugly skin creature or lizard/snake/toad/fish(kinda cute)

Mammals especially are boring.

And I'm confidently thinking such thoughts and then I run into this.

Is it even real?
I take it all back.
