WOWZERS! Bring back the shirt suit supreme!

Of late the "in" colour to paint houses is: grey. Boring grey. "Boring" green at least blends into the lovely countryside. "Boring" white at least reflects a lot of heat radiation during summer. It's also very in to wear black all day at work, then go out and party in black.

Ah, nothing like safe choices!

How about more FUN choices? How about choices that are creative? How about choices where people aren't terrified of being seen to be like "lower" status people like women or people of colour.

Yes, my goal is to move it over to Social.coop when ready—I'm just testing now on medlab (my lab's server) to avoid annoying folks here.

Miss Universe (or any beauty pageant regardless of gender) makes me wince. But I have to admit that my guilty pleasure is the "national costumes".

This is "Great Britain's" entry. BWAHAHAHA!

We own you all, because we own the English language!

This is Ireland's entry. Good on you for emphasizing that you are a multicultural country!

Oh, I think Britain wins on cringiness, hands down! But maybe that's just me.

Biologist J. B. S. Haldane once quipped that if there's a God, the Creator seems to have “an inordinate fondness for beetles.”

Why? Well, 1/2 of species described in #science are insects (among eukaryotes). Of those, >1/3 are beetles, at ~400,000 known species.

I’m fond of these critters bc I began my career working with Plagiodera versicolora, a particularly cute beetle.

Now some entomologists suspect there may be just as many parasitic wasps but that’s a tale for another day.

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Haldane also wrote the idiosyncratic children’s book My Friend Mr Leakey, one of the more unusual ways to discover biology & genetics when you went to see what else the author had written.
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Sir Terry Pratchett agrees about the beetles. And I think that biochemists would rather claim Haldane as one of their own. Polymath indeed.

@Matt_Noyes BTW, have you seen the budget discussion I've initiated here: loomio.com/d/n1TbwozE/toward-a… Curious if you think this is worth doing before the new governance model gets adopted.
in reply to Nathan Schneider

How about if I were to share the budget proposal in the main Loomio group for feedback, adding some language that this will serve to guide a process that will get taken over by the OC? Or should we just wait?

Day 4: Ten Days, Ten Films.

This is a lot of fun!
Over ten days you pick an image from a film without any title to give away where it is from, so that people can guess. You can also nominate others to do the same. That way more people are in on the game! (or not–your choice 😀 )

But remember: NO SPOILERS! If you recognise a film, don’t say what it is! Say something that indicates you know, but allows others to guess as well. Your messages then become helpful hints!

I am a known google hater in my circles but I truuuuuuly believe the number one threat to folks making a living on the internet is googles stranglehold on search and ads.

On walled gardens and social media traps..
It turns out we fear missing out more than we actually enjoy interacting on social media.

A very elegant blog post explaining a new paper which looked at college students use of Instagram + TikTok but that is probably also a nice explanation of why so many people are still on X/twitter..

Santa’s little helper. My middle’s orange tabby Ollie is getting into the holiday spirit. He was a semi-feral cat who let my daughter and her husband adopt him. This is his first Christmas inside a home. I’ll be sure to send any pictures of him discovering the Christmas tree.

You don’t often see outward facing seats on transit vehicles, but being able to gaze out the window rather than at an ad across the aisle makes for a pretty enjoyable ride! (This is the Kuala Lumpur Monorail).

“Man the Hunter has dominated the study of human evolution for nearly half a century & pervaded popular culture. [But] it was the arrival of agriculture that led to rigid gendered roles & economic inequality. Hunting belonged to everyone.”

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Suspect it’s no coincidence so many deities of hunting (and often archery) were goddesses: Diana (Roman), Artemis (Greek), Flidais (Celtic), Skaði (Norse), Neith, Pakhet and (to some extent) Bastet (all Egyptian), Mielikki (Finnish), Banka-Mundi (Hindu), Bendis (Thracian), Devana (Slavic) and on it goes.

#boost

Why don't universities have their own Mastodon instances yet?

Why don't students get a Mastodon handle when they enrol?

Why don't universities host lecture videos on PeerTube in the Fediverse?

There is a lot to be said for universities getting more involved in the Fediverse.
