And just a reminder everyone: z=14 means that we're looking at originally ultraviolet light redshifted down to infrared!

Our cat does something like this, only with dust! He comes in from his catio sneezing and covered in brown powder.

I'm looking at the flathub.org/statistics page and I see there's a chart breaking down how many apps are in each category, what would be really cool is that same graph but showing how many downloads per category @flathub
in reply to Brodie Robertson

I get the cool part, but I'm unsure of the usecase. categories are pretty random (and bad) already, not sure showing downloads makes much sense.
in reply to Brodie Robertson

The map on that page sucks since it doesn't divide downloads by country's population

Shout out to whoever in the North Korean government is using Flathub
in reply to Brodie Robertson

there are companies who change the location of their ip address for monitoring purposes. Maybe it's related to that?

Twenty minutes of fireflies in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, near the famous Elkmont campground. The yellow sparkles are Photinus carolinus, the synchronous fireflies that have become a tourism sensation, and the greenish trails are the more enigmatic "blue ghost" Phausis reticulata.

Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night was such a great ride but man I am really disappointed with that ending, it feels like everything just needed to be conveniently wrapped up in the final episode without properly exploring some of those character dynamics.
in reply to Brodie Robertson

Is there something more or just another CGDCT for slightly 'mature' audience?

in reply to Muse

Those oil-filled radiators are surprisingly effective. We chose not to use the central heat in our old house, and one of those kept a sizable bedroom (with crappy windows!) reasonably warm. Of course "cold" in Florida is relative.
in reply to Muse

Come to think of it, I was using them in my mobile home up north and they worked pretty well there too!

Hellish workplace for knowledge workers:
- Constantly interrupt them
- Distracting tech (Slack, IM, Teams, smart phones)
- No work-home boundary
- Measure productivity by activity
- No prioritizing
- 1-hour mtgs default
- No time for deep work

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

I'm kind of confused by Pakistan, which holds pride events but allegedly gives death penalty for homosexuality? How is that possible? Maybe those silly blasphemy laws which tend to overreach? I'd like to know how often these punishments are actually carried out rather than just threatened.

Eventually, she began experimenting & writing about #science. Her expertise spanned from astronomy to chemistry to physics & she published articles & books.

The weather machine was designed by the production crew behind the Alien films, and the video was storyboarded by Terry Gilliam.

Do you have a mental illness? Why some people answer ‘yes’, even if they haven’t been diagnosed

"Diagnostic labels may become identity-defining and self-limiting, as people come to believe their problems are enduring, hard-to-control aspects of who they are...

"...Ongoing cultural shifts are fostering increasingly expansive definitions of mental illness. These shifts are likely to have mixed blessings. By normalising mental illness they may help to remove its stigma. However, by pathologising some forms of everyday distress, they may have an unintended downside.

"As we wrestle with the mental health crisis, it is crucial we find ways to increase awareness of mental ill health without inadvertently inflating it."

in reply to Muse

I don't think mental illnesses are contagious, but they sure seem to be common. Everyone I know claims to have some phobia, some disorder, some addiction, or some ongoing stressor that won't go away.
in reply to Muse

We live in stressful times. It is bad for our physical and mental health. It's sad, though, how people will lock themselves into complete helplessness out of despair. Others hope if they can just get the right drug, it will help them to feel better while they continue to be stuck in difficult circumstances. We are not always our own best friends.
