Hi all! Good news — Google has decided to restore the permissions to our #Android app so we can bring back the full file syncing functionality. Expect a test tonight and final later this or early next week. Thanks a lot for your support, it is what made all the difference!

I'm expecting there are people here who know the details behind this, so I'd like to learn more.

It was doing the rounds some time ago:

Douglas Hofstadter wrote a rebuttal:

So ... was there actually any research?

Does anyone have a reference?

I've only ever seen the meme/anecdote.

As always, boosts for reach would be welcome.

Cheers!

english language reform idea: we should adopt gender neutral terminology from gendered languages.

in german, the word for (e.g.) "driver" is gendered: "fahrer" (masc.) or "fahrerin" (fem.). a "gender star" is sometimes used to indicate that gender is irrelevant and/or to include nonbinary people: "fahrer*innen".

i propose that instead of using (e.g.) "actor" as a gender neutral term, we should use "act*innen", and keep "actor" and "actress" as explicitly gendered. in addition, words that are already gender neutral, like "chef", should become "chefor" (masc.), "chefess" (fem.), and "chef*innen" (neut.). we can also replace newer words that are designed to be gender neutral like "chairperson" or "chair" with "chair*innen".

this would benefit nobody and make everything mildly worse, making it better than 85% of proposed english language reforms on the internet

in reply to Lynnesbian

This would have the welcome side effect that we could probably get markdown parsers to correctly parse (ignore) the *innen asterisk.

@Friendica Support
As for my knowledge this intended newbee speaks fluently german, englisch and spanisch, tho maybe du/you/tu is a little bit to shy to ask for help .. not sure.

What is your setup and what have you tried till now @Mina to install your #friendica server, maybe we can figure out what's your problem with the installation.
🤔

in reply to utopiArte

That's sweet of you!

I followed the instructions on

friendi.ca/resources/installat…

word for word, i.e.

1. uploaded the directories (including addons)

2. renamed the .htaccess-dist to .htaccess (it's an Apache server)

3. Created a database and had the details at hand.

4. Went to friendica.penkagram.me in order to start the installer.

and what happened was:

The installer didn't start, but went redirecting me into

[url]/index.php/install/install/install/…

1/?

@helpers

in reply to Mina

until finally the browser told me "redirection error".

I then tested with some arbitrary PHP file if PHP worked. It did (in the root directory and the friendica subdirectory).

Then I tried stuff that was recommended in the forum (where I also found people told to become developers if they had problems), like entering database details into config files, some changes in .htaccess, but, alas, to no avail.

2/?

@helpers

in reply to Mina

I managed to break it, so that now I get a Error 500 when trying to access the page.

So:

I am going to delete everything, start over from scratch, and if that doesn't work, try it with git.

If you have any idea, what might have gone wrong, that would be nice. If not, never mind.

3/3

@helpers

in reply to Mina

@Mina

Not sure what is the actual state of the art of the installer is. Last I "heard" and experienced is that it was broken and that the best way to install is thru the console commands detailed in the helpers page:
/help/Install#Option+B%3A+Run+the+automatic+install+script

tupambae.org/help/Install#Opti…

And yes, it's recommendable to use the git install form, that way you will be able to easily update the installation.

@Mina
in reply to Mina

Hey @Mina, any news on your intents?
No feedback?

Actually I didn't followed the @Friendica Support or friendica news channel latelly, so no idea if there were any updates. What I wondered "the other day" is that we could ask @Tobias wich friendica version was the last that had the install working fine and simply install that version, via gitpull. Once installed you can than just start the updates. If you do that before even creating any contacts or content, that should go quite smoothly. We recently did updates from 2023.05 on this server and the referenced installation guide was from that (stable) version in it's time and worked well so I assume that installing via gitpull but adressing that version, or the one Tobias indicates should work out easily.

in reply to utopiArte

I'm a bit brain-foggy these days.

In order to do such a thing like the Friendica installation, I need to be sharp.

@helpers @tobias

in reply to Mina

in reply to utopiArte

I will try again, once my head is clear again.

Anyway: I'm pretty sure, the problems I had during the installation were not caused by Friendica itself (I mean: there are a lot of people, who successful completed an installation), but by some configuration with my hosting solution (on Ionos.de).

Just useful error messages during the installation process would be great.

@tux @heluecht @hypolite @raroun @tobias @oldkid

in reply to Mina

@Mina

Actually you even might consider to setup your subdomain at first at weingaertner-it.de/, if they still do friendica hosting, I get a 503 right now over here. Apparently a single user instance costs 5 euro a month. If you like it you could than move the already existing DB to your own setup. Somehow that's how this instance came to live, but with another provider.

@Mina
in reply to utopiArte

I already pay 10€ per month for a quite generous hosting package, I already paid for the domain name, and I don't want another regular cost.
in reply to utopiArte

@seyon I beg to differ: the benefit of changing passwords or MFA factor very much depends on ones risk assessment and possible attack vectors. For most people using MFA and using strong passwords generated and stored in ones password manager is more than enough. No need to regularly change them, besides of confirmed data breaches or stolen credentials, IMHO @gamingonlinux
