> Government considers social media time limits for children

Here we go again: an Internet watershed...

I wonder how the government proposes to identify "social media apps" for the (alleged) two hour time limit.

Per service? Or will service providers have to exchange information with each other as to how much time has elapsed?

Will they name which service providers they actually mean (Meta , TikTok etc.)?

#OnlineSafetyAct

in reply to Neil Brown

What happened with the idea of parents being responsible for parenting? Why is the government doing it now?
in reply to Eugen Rochko

it's just using "protect children" as an excuse to curb online dissent. That way they can control what people post online and if you're against that kind of censorship and control they can point fingers at you for "not caring about children's safety". It's the oldest trick in the book and people keep falling for it.

As you said, the real problem is parents not being responsible with how their kids interact with the internet.

in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron parents are too busy looking at their phones. Maybe they need time limits 😂
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron The same way that the government legislate on lots of things which are harmful to children.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

I remember being very struck by this from the then Children's Commissioner in Dec 2020.

"So, does the institution always need to be only the host? If you have an institution where the members of it are also its voices [-->] and performers, could that lead to solidarities between artists and institutional workers? What happens when there's not a clear division between those positions? Would an artist we invite into the organisation then work together as a peer with the organisation?"

This answer resonates with me, in response to a comment about 'institution-making' and spoken by interviewee John Bingham-Hall.

Mastodon/Activity Pub question:

As far as I can tell mastodon posts are expected to have a rich text / html-subset representation i.e. docs.joinmastodon.org/spec/act…)

I'm writing a tiny activity pub service, mastodon is currently stripping out all html tags when displaying posts from my dev account (see e.g. mastodon.social/@sarah@tap.res…), plain text posts work fine (see e.g. mastodon.social/@sarah@tap.res…)

I'm attempting to work out why that is the case, but this is proving to be a hard thing to search for.

in reply to Sarah Jamie Lewis

I see `<p>Mastodon...` in the database. Is there a chance there was a HTML encoding issue in the payload your server sent us? In the JSON representation I can fetch right now, I see `<p>Mastodon...` correctly.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron Thanks for taking a look, and yes there was indeed an issue with the formatting ( mastodon.social/@sarahjamielew…)

The idea of art being some elitist privileged activity that needs to be democratized (genAI bro argument) is funny to me.

I had no problem finding art supplies in rural Tunisia and India. My friend TomTom paints on cereal boxes because he can't afford a sketchbook and still does amazing art.

If you have a mind, you can make art.

Alan Turing died by suicide on 7 June 1954. Turing was convicted of gross indecency in 1952 and given a choice between imprisonment and probation. His probation would be conditional on his agreement to undergo hormonal physical changes designed to reduce his libido. Turing's conviction led to the removal of his security clearance and barred him from continuing with his consultancy for GCHQ. He was denied entry into the United States after his conviction.

I love pie! I used to ask for pie instead of cake for my birthday (today). I was surprised to find that these recipes were considered old-fashioned and were no longer being made so much. I have made and eaten most of them...so good!

For the vinegar pie--it's not as strange as it sounds. People used to make vinegars using all sorts of different fruits. These could be used as part of a raising agent. But they were also used to make a simple cordial or homemade soda pop. If you made a vinegar using lemons, then you subsequently made a pie with it including a meringue topping, you just have a lemon meringue pie. (albeit with a little more alcohol)

Sure, people could move away to more liberal/open platforms like PeerTube, but the audience there is too fragmented and small to sustain creators financially. Things just aren’t quite there yet

And why are people on YouTube? Because that’s where the content is. Viewers won’t move away until after content creators do. You are the people with the power to do this.

in reply to It's FOSS

Why does this seem incredulous? Google wanting to keep a monopoly on things is so unlike them.

While I am all for increasing effort in FOSS and open infrastructure, I do worry a bit about centralizing so much in the Linux foundation. They are sponsored by big tech to a large degree, which is fine on its own. But when centralizing power the potential of abuse becomes increasingly larger.
I'm still happy for the potential benefits for the open infrastructure movement though!
