I tend to adjust my RPE during my running sessions based on my sleep and awake HRV. If my HRV is above or below my normal range (which is 105-110 sleep and 83-85 awake) I adjust the intensity of the workout accordingly.
What metrics do you monitor and how do you adjust your workouts according to these metrics?

Hmmm ... I feel a wave of dissonance entering my head. The sheep I met (on a farm on the NY/Pennsylvania border near Binghamton) were as dumb as rocks, maybe dumber. After a snowfall they would be just lumps covered with snow - often with newborn lambs under those snow lumps as well.
There are, or at least used to be, lots of sheep (and shepherds and sheep dogs) out in the Mojave - It was kinda fun to watch 'em moving around - sort of like the movement of a weegee board - no obvious sense of what was driving them (apart from sheep dogs) but clearly there was some sort of organization.
And remember, the book "Far From the Madding Crowd" begins with sheep dogs driving Farmer Oak's herd of sheep over a cliff. Was that because the dogs sensed that the sheep were starting to figure out the nefarious dealings of the dogs?
