"What a big relief it was years ago when I realised I don't have to be an optimist. ... I declared myself an diehard 'possibilist'. And it works. I've learned ...that human beings don't need certainty of outcome to achieve great feats. We only need a sense of possibility."

— Frances Moore Lappé: Diet for a Small Planet, p. xlix

"…people can become fluent in Irish much quicker than in English."

I was delighted to interview a really interesting guest for the blog, social media phenomenon, Mollie Guidera, aka Irish With Mollie.

in reply to Jen Sorensen

I think PC has gone so far it'stime for it to do a 180. Bigotry and hate are now politically "correct"
in reply to Jen Sorensen

Funny thing is, dog whistles by their very nature is "politically correct speech"; they won't say what they really mean because they know it's unpalatable, so they have to dress it up in a way that's recognizable to those who are in the know, but innocuous to someone coming in fresh.

@neauoire hey it’s been a little while! (New server on my end too.) As I continue to try to find my place in the world of computers, my mind was drawn back to your Strange Loop 2023 talk. The talk and the conversations we had online have continued to stick with me, and were the most memorable part of the conference. I hope you’re doing well
in reply to Josh Justice

hey Josh, welcome back. I've kept exploring this sort of stuff after the conference(and still am). Let's keep talking 😀

It has been 2 days since I last posted a cat photo. I apologize and offer up this angel for your consideration.

@neauoire thanks! i'm gonna do all rendering in uxn though, it's more or less gonna be the same broad strokes architecture as taro currently is, just instead of communicating over STDIO it'll communicate over 9p, and instead of the backend being written in crystal with event loops it'll be in C using the xrxs approach!

but i'm sure as i redo the whole frontend i'll have more than a few questions for you since i haven't really touched uxntal in a couple years ^^;

in reply to nilix

ah! okok, got it. Well then that's a non issue, but as always, I'm here to help if you need anything 😀

Say no to Palantir in the NHS

NHS England is rolling out software to run our health records from Palantir – a US spy-tech firm that has supported mass deportation in the US and enabled genocide in Gaza.

One of Palantir’s founders is also openly against the NHS. Peter Thiel claimed it “makes people sick” and said that the British people love the NHS because we’re suffering from Stockholm syndrome.

We can’t let a company like this take control of our healthcare system.

But we can fight back right now. We’ve set up a simple tool so you can find out if your local NHS trust has started using the software, and then send an email demanding they say no to Palantir.

With the government putting NHS trusts under pressure to adopt the software, we need to act right now. If you want to keep Palantir out of our NHS, send an email to your local trust and Wes Streeting, secretary of state for health.

in reply to Muse

I do sign those petitions and many others. More importantly, I donate to organizations that fight against surveillance, such as EFF, and to candidates who don't back government surveillance, such as Sam Wang and James Talarico.

Trump INVESTIGATION into Jerome Powell CRUSHED by Federal Judge

In breaking news, Chief Judge Boesberg, citing to a "mountain of evidence" that Trump's DOJ is criminally investigating Fed Chair Jay Powell for improper purpose and no evidence of any crime being committed at all regarding the Fed Reserve building renovation cost overruns, has quashed the grand jury subpoenas and excoriated Trump and his DOJ in doing so. Popok reports.

The trouble is, one never knows till they rule on a case how far into the judicial system the rot has spread.
in reply to Joseph Teller

Oh, I know it has been contaminated but there are still islands of sanity.

I'm not a very good computer programmer, but I love writing programs. It's great fun, and incredibly satisfying when I botch together something close to what I was aiming for.

Oh and I've finally started learning rust (after threatening this over a year ago).

I put aside Ada for another day. Can't remember who, but someone on here had recommended it.

Since we have a pi day coming up, I thought I'd re-share one of my favorite pieces. Cloud Computing / pi in the sky. Looking forward to working on this some more, especially as it moves toward installation scale.

@Gargron love the shirt! Nice fabric and the print looks very good.

Nextcloud joins open letter opposing #Android developer verification program. Because we don’t need more control from #BigTech, do we? 🤦

Re-reading @neauoire ‘s excellent talk “Weathering Software Winter” 100r.co/site/weathering_softwa… and one line really struck home, in the light of all the woe we’re seeing (AI, sloperating systems, age verification aka biometric identity capture/surveillance etc.):

“I wanted a way of doing computers that nobody could take away from me.”

So the Transputer emulator is at the base of my attempt to do that.

in reply to Matt Gumbley

your work on the transputer is how I first learned about your work, I considered the T4 for a bit before going with Uxn, and seeing you take it and run with it has been really nice. You're definitely going that way, where you'll have a bedrock abstraction that nobody can take away from you.

Keep it up!
