404 Media's @jasonkoebler and ProPublica's @ben are discussing how the #fediverse helps #publishers in the latest episode of @mike's #DotSocial podcast. Highly recommended.

This struck me particularly:

Ben is making the case that the Fediverse is the means by which publishers can re-take the initiative with technology instead of simply having to live with whatever the platforms decide. That is powerful stuff!

The #UMontana is cancelling more than 5,000 #journals from #Elsevier, #TaylorAndFrancis, and #Wiley, forced by "rising journal…#prices and a stagnant #budget…The library has seen a $700,000 reduction in money received since fiscal year 2020."

Some of the #publishers fighting #BookBans and celebrating #PrideMonth are also suing the @internetarchive. "If anything, Pride Month should be the moment in which publishers join librarians in their efforts to make as much knowledge as available as possible to as many people as possible. #OpenAccess is thus an essential tool in the fight for #LGBTQIA+ rights and minority rights in general."
